quote from lost girl:

Flashing lights in the eyes are common. So are seeing black dots, or things that appear to be like bits of fiber, or 'lint'. Signs of a problem with the eye would be having a glare, like a flashbulb glare, that does not go away, black spots that appear in the center of your field of vision etc. (Talked to a optometrist about this a few months ago, when getting a new pair of glasses.)

The above quote is from Gimpy, not lost girl. Lost girl states she has been seeing weird lights/colors for many years. In the case of a retinal detachment, symptoms would be a sudden increase in floaters, either showers of small specks/threads or even a floater that appears as a flap. If these floaters occur with flashes of light, that would mean that the floater is still attached to the retina, this tugging or pulling on the retina causes neuro stimulation (which is seen as flashes of light) and could cause a hole, tear or even a detachment of the retina.

Free floating "floaters" that move when you try to look at them are generally not harmful. Since they are freely moving, they are just debris in the vitreous, hence are not attached to the retina and will not cause a detachment.

Since lost girl has been having these symptoms for years, I would be inclined to agree with Laura, that it may be a sign of something that could be problematic later on. A strict diet, avoiding gluten, dairy, sugar and all processed foods - could avert problems down the road.

Most doctors relagate strange visual symptoms to the category of "ocular migraine". In other words, they just don't know what causes these symptoms. I'd venture to guess diet plays a huge role, as well as the electromagnetic "smog" we currently live in.

Thanks Lilou for the clarification. I'm so glad you jumped in here and explained what is happening to lost girl. I experienced a torn retina and as the symptoms lost girl described resembled mine, I was concerned.

However my detachment happened all at once, so Lost Girl's symptoms indicate a different issue.

I'd rather be wrong and be corrected than say nothing if there was actually was something wrong.

So thanks again.
