Amazing "Black Cloud" in Finland

It looks like a scene from War of the Worlds — a sinister black cloud races across the sky, turning a summer's day at a beach in Finland into stormy darkness within seconds.

Dramatic footage, filmed in the capital Helsinki, shows the moment a storm "supercell" hit the area, unleashing torrential rain and injuring at least 40 people.

Sunbakers are seen pointing at the sky and scrambling to gather their belongings as the cloud covers the sky.

In less than a minute the sky appears to have turned completely black and wind and rain lash the beach.

At the nearby Sonisphere music festival 40 people were injured and audio equipment was destroyed, The Sun newspaper reports.

I was safe inside(unlike Aragorn) with my family when it struck. It had a green tint to it(seen from our angle) and the hole thing was surreal.

We have started to have the same crazy clouds and sudden storms down here in Quebec as well. I don't remember witnessing sudden changes like that and so often.

interesting that it had a green tint to it. Here in Perth (Western Australia) we had a huge hail storm where a huge dark cloud with a green tint to it caused millions of dollars damage, with hails stones the size of baseballs and some bigger. There was also flooding throughout the city, and like the one in Finland it came super fast, without warning.

I feel I have to specify/correct what I wrote earlier.
- the light(ambient) went distinctly greenish/yellow when the clouds outer rim was over us
- although my spouse and elder daughter claimed that also the cloud had a greenish tint to it I never saw the front from afar so I can't tell
- IMO the colours of the cloud looked like what could be expected(although intensely dramatic) but when I didn't focus on the cloud the ambient light(both inside and outside) was aforementioned greenish/yellow

This question has reminded me of an event that was almost forgotten. Approximately three years ago, was in a house with three other people, it was night. It started to rain. We felt like the rain began to fall very hard on the roof and went to see the weather. We saw something that shocked and scared us. A lot of rain, the rays were red! Totally red! Soon we left there. Once home, I asked my family if a storm had dropped those features, and they said no. I searched for information on the topic of red lightning, and I have not found anything. So now the way, if anyone has any information on this phenomena, I would like to know what exactly.

Obviously a severe storm cell with very rapid steering winds. I was going to suggest it was some kind of microburst, then I read Aragorn's post and he confirms it was a wet downburst. Recently I studied wet, dry and hybrid downbursts, so it was interesting to read someone's firsthand experience of one! I have experienced wet downbursts myself, and the rapidity with which they approach, together with the flickering lightning, green-tinted cloud, and the very strong wind of the storm inflow (before the storm's even stronger winds hit you) can be truly terrifying -- you feel like the end of the world is upon you!

Just from the video it looks like what is called a "roll cloud". We see such things at least once a summer here in the US central plains. Turbulent gray leading clouds with black or green cloud following. Usually followed by high winds, hail and heavy rain. Sometimes tornadoes. It does indeed look like the end of the world. The cold and warm air masses battle it out in this area in early summer.

But very strange in Finland I expect.

The red light is interesting. I don't remember it in connection with thunderstorms. But sometimes when I would do an exercise run on winter evenings in the dark I would find myself surrounded by a red light.

The world's weather is changing for sure.

I had never heard about that, and I don't know if this answers your question, but this was what I found:


Recently two new types of rays have been verified: red and blue.

These atmospheric discharges occur very high in the upper layers of Earth's atmosphere, much higher than the rays that we all know.

The reds range from high in the clouds to the ionosphere itself, an ionized layer 90 kilometers away from the surface of the Earth.

Last only a fraction of a second. The existence of these red rays suggested previously, but it was in 1994 when a ship flying over massive storms recorded with his team of high-speed video of this spectacular event.

Scientists are not sure of the cause or nature of these red rays.
