For those who always wondered what the Antipode is to where you live, or whatever may be the case, here is the map to do so:
Seems true, in the North it's into the ocean pretty much, and it is a big ocean. From where I live, give or take a thousand miles, it is close to the "French Southern and Antarctic Lands” (Island) - Port Jeanne d’Arc and Port aux Francais. For people in Southern France it looks to be on land, or close, which is Northern New Zealand. When you think on it, the chances of hitting a Southern land Antipode from the North is not very high.
There is a list here that cites some direct Antipodes from city to city (it is a table and it comes out poorly copying - so have a look):
Exact or almost exact antipodes cities {and} Major cities or capitals close to being antipodes
Example: Masterton (New Zealand) — Segovia (Spain) {and} Bogota (Colombia) — Jakarta (Indonesia)
There is also a Coordinates Converter on the site.
The antipodes of any place on the Earth is the point on the Earth's surface which is diametrically opposite to it. Two points that are antipodal to each other are connected by a straight line running through the centre of the Earth. An antipodal point it is often called an antipode (Wikipedia).
The Most of Europeans and Americans believe that if you dig a hole, in a straight line through the center of the Earth, you would come out on the other side right in China. But this is just a saying, because, in reality, if you dig a straight tunnel, in most areas, of Europe or United States you will come out in the ocean. The only places where a straight hole will emerge in China are parts in Argentina and Chile.
