Are American Spirit cigarettes as safe as we think?

I would like to submit an idea for an article about American Spirit brand cigarettes. I have been smoking these since I found out that organic or purer tobacco is a good thing via Laura's information on the forum. However, I just ran across this article on Google while looking for information about various brands and cost, as A.S. is expensive.
I have also heard about Native brand cigarettes (Reservation Smokes.com) which is the Seneca nation of Indians, the Allegheny Indian Reservation in western NY state. Wondering if these are better health wise regarding additives. I tried a Seneca cigarette and liked it, but one has to order them online, and the Native brands have been having trouble with being able to sell their products online with credit cards.

That in itself is another idea topic, as it appears that the govn't (the Pact Act) is trying to prevent them from doing this and they are currently, after fighting this (but the fight is not over by far) only able to accept money orders and checks. See this:

UPDATE 7/4/2010:

We were successful in being granted a Temporary Restraining Order in Court on Friday, July 2nd, which means GOOD NEWS.. as of Tuesday, July 6th, we can start taking customers orders; However, unfortunately do to issues we ran into with our previous electronic check provider, we will not be able to process any electronic check payments for the time being, so all order payments MUST BE MAILED IN using a check or money order.

Also, if you had placed an order with us from July 21st up to July 28th and you never received your order, we apologize for the inconvenience and lack of communication during this hectic time; however, since we are once again going to be able to ship orders, if you still want your order fulfilled, please either call us or email us to let us know, but keep in mind we will need you to mail in payment to us.

One more thing, some products have recently gone up in price due to a manufacturer's pricing increase. The items affected are most premium brands. So pricing adjustments may be needed to your order total until we find out the exact pricing increase amounts from our suppliers. Once we find that out, we will work diligently at updating our prices on our website. So if you submit an order in the next few days, please wait for us to respond via email with the correct total BEFORE you mail in any payments. Thank You.

I am not able to be online daily, but if you need anything else from me, let me know.
thank you,

Hi Solarmother. Although I really dislike the idea that the Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Company is owned by RJ Reynolds, there really doesn't seem to be much substance in regard to health in the linked article. Just more anti-smoking propaganda perhaps.

...some smokers believe that switching from some brands—such as Camel or Marlboro—to an organic cigarette will actually be a ‘healthy’ decision. [...] And though American Spirit contains links to sites that may help a smoker quit, the company is still pedaling a carcinogenic product—even though it uses organic products.[...]

I think we all know that organic/all natural tobacco is better for everyone. Too bad it is so pricey though.

Mmm, talking about tobacco... Seems I've got a sort of natural 'bad tobacco meter' on my fingernails. Fact is the skin near the fingernails peel away when I'm smoking bad tobacco/commercial packed cigarettes, especially the ring finger and index of the right hand (have no ring though :). At least, after years of experiencing this kind of issue the observations seems to match too often to be just a coincidence.

Unfortunately I can't find and won't order online such cig's brand, maybe in a bigger town than mine they have it. Sometimes I fall for a comm. cig's pack in the weekend or when I have to work out of town. Then usually I roll my own Virginia, the green package.

Has anyone noticed a similar effect? Any body-reaction with any bad tobacco around?

I am an American Spirit organic guy, I do believe they are a bit different than the commercial brands, I didn't know they were owned by RJ. Although I think the arguments in that article aren't strong, I am willing to hear other options since I have to travel to the border to get them. My experience is that the organic roll your own seems to be the best of their line of products, I tried once the organic manufactured (that is, already crafted into a proper cig with the filter incorporated) and oh surprise when they tasted a lot different, also, they acted like the commercial ones, they didn't light out until the fire consumed the whole thing. Unlike the roll your own variety which have to be re-lighted from time to time.

Unfortunately ALL commercial cigarettes sold in the US are required by law to be "Fire Safe Cigarettes" (FSC) which contain ethylene vinyl acetate. :(

I got a top of the line rolling machine

...and started buying organic Dutch tobacco by the pound from a tobacco store in the city.

What's the name of that Dutch tobacco? I'm looking for alternatives. They're hard to find out here.

I'd be interested as well because I can't find something like American spirit here.
There are two brands I know which might be ok (fleur du pays) but I can't vouch for their quality and some are for pipe smokers (Tabacs de la semois, hand-made tobacco).

In my place where I'm living are some brands available, : "Crossroad" (_www.st-group.com), "Pueblo" (_www.poeschl-tobacco.com) these ones are without artificial additives, but do not fall in the category of -organic- like the red/green american spirit.

While looking up possible organic tobacco sources in EU, I found this site which lists tobacco additives for every country.

http://www.bat-ingredients.com

Good motivation to search for organic.

It just says "Dutch organic" on the jar at the tobacco store? I found a pipe shop in the city that carries cigarette tobacco too.
They have one shelf of organic tobaccos, I tried them all, and the "Dutch" is the mildest. I suspect the shop owner is not giving out brand names so you can't bypass him and order direct.

Unfortunately, even "Organic" and "All Natural" cigarettes in the US contain ethylene vinyl acetate...they get away with still calling their product "organic tobacco" because the "FSC" chemicals are on the cigarettes paper.

I'm not sure that this applies to loose leaf/roll your own. My pouch of AS organic has the same 100% Flax papers that it has come with for years.

There doesn't seem to be any labeling either on the pouch or papers to support this. Anyone care to try the 1-800 number and inquire?

Wishful thinking? :(

It doesn't...which is why I roll my own. Although there is talk of trying to force the companies that make the tubes to use the "FSC" chemicals...it's not a law yet.

Thanks everyone for the other brand names.
Maybe I can find some El Pueblo though but I am not sure it's widely available.
I haven't found an organic brand recognized as such here in Belgium (I probably haven't found it yet) and to get tobacco from the Us is a big no no.

Maybe Truth seeker would be interested in this ?
Maybe I found one.
I bought it in a tobacco shop in Brussels, it's brand new here, it's called FreeJack tobacco, they are without additive.
Apart from that I don't have any more info for the moment.
