Army says 12 dead, 31 injured at Fort Hood

I guess what stands out to me as suspicious is the base's failure to protect itself. Being an army installation, one would assume there are protocols for protecting itself in the case of various emergencies. I have a family member in one the air force reserve. His base is much smaller, but security is tight. If one is not proving oneself at the gate with the proper credentials within 30 seconds of being asked, the guards are already tense, intimidating, and edging towards their sidearms. One would think that one of the largest army bases in the world would react rather quickly to such an incident, but according to the report, there was enough time for the SWAT team to arrive and 4 of its members to be wounded.

Perhaps on American soil, the protocol is to call local law enforcement, yet the reason this is suspicious to me is that other engineered events (the Kennedys, 9-11) were accompanied by failures of internal security that could have prevented the event otherwise.

Very good point. I'll have the new session up in a few - there is a question/answer in there about this incident.

The problem is that Fort Hood is a massive base, and the alleged gunman was stationed there and had access to areas that would not have ordinarily been deemed high risk. He entered his workplace, the Soldier Readiness Center, where personnel receive routine medical treatment immediately prior to and on return from deployment, and began shooting. Security would have had to have been VERY tight for anyone to have stopped him more quickly. The entire shooting spree lasted just 10 minutes. With 9/11 and JFK the attackers were "outsiders", in the case of Fort Hood it was an insider.

The Sunday show should be available sometime Monday evening.

An update on Nidal Hasan

BELTON, Texas – The Army psychiatrist charged in a deadly shooting spree at Fort Hood will be kept isolated from other inmates at the Texas jail where he's been transferred.

Maj. Nidal Hasan was airlifted from a San Antonio military hospital to the Bell County Jail in Belton at about 4 a.m. Friday.

Sheriff Dan Smith says Hasan will be kept in a cell in the jail infirmary and will be under 24-hour watch. Smith did not say whether Hasan is under guard because of fears for his safety or others.

Hasan had been at the military hospital since shortly after the Nov. 5 shooting spree that left him paralyzed. He is charged with 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

BELTON, Texas (AP) — The Army psychiatrist charged in the deadly Fort Hood shooting was transferred early Friday from a San Antonio military hospital to a jail near the Army post, his attorney said.

Maj. Nidal Hasan's attorney, John Galligan, told The Associated Press that a Fort Hood official confirmed that Hasan was airlifted to the jail at about 4 a.m.

Hasan was listed as a Bell County Jail inmate as of Friday morning, according to the jail's online records.

Fort Hood officials said Hasan had been transferred overnight and referred questions to Bell County Sheriff Dan Smith, who was to discuss details at a Friday afternoon news conference.

Galligan said he was concerned that authorities did not notify him of the transfer in advance as promised. One of Hasan's relatives visited him Thursday night at San Antonio's Brooke Army Medical Center but was told Friday that Hasan was not there, Galligan said.

Hasan had been at the military hospital since shortly after the Nov. 5 shooting spree, which left him paralyzed. He is charged with 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder.

He faces an Article 32 hearing, similar to a grand jury proceeding, as early as July 1. After that, a military judge will determine whether there is enough evidence to go to trial. Prosecutors have not said whether they would seek the death penalty.

Last month, Bell County commissioners finalized a contract with the military to house Hasan. Although the jail usually houses military defendants from nearby Fort Hood, which does not have holding facilities, a special agreement was required for Hasan because "unusual and extraordinary security measures" were necessary, the sheriff has said.

Smith previously said he would provide details about transferring and housing Hasan only after he was at the jail.

Galligan has said the 183-day jail contract to house Hasan began March 31, the day Hasan was given a medical discharge to leave the military hospital.

(CNN) — There is an active shooter at the sprawling central Texas base of Fort Hood, a source at Fort Hood told CNN on Wednesday.

The situation is serious and sirens are going off, said the source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

A spokesman for the base said an “incident” was under way but declined for provide additional information.

Fort Hood’s official Twitter feed asked that all personnel on post shelter in place.

A local sheriff’s office said that it had heard there was a shooting.

“They got some kind of shooting incident going on. They haven’t told us anything. It was on post and being handled by the military. Fort Hood has not asked for any assistance,” said Lt. Donnie Adams with the Bell County Sheriff’s Office.

On November 5, 2009, Army Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan opened fire at Fort Hood, killing 13 people and injuring 32.

The former Army psychiatrist was convicted of premeditated murder, and a military jury recommended that Hasan be put to death.

CNN’s Barbara Starr, Carma Hassan and Devon Sayers contributed to this report.
