After having €200.00 stolen from my postepay card on-line to pay for train tickets on the trenitalia site, I did a search to see if anyone else had suffered the same fate. I discovered that I was not alone. I also found out that although Poste has access to ID details of the on-line card user, they will not disclose them. The card is not insured, even though there is a €1.00 charge every time you transfer money to it. If you go to the Polizia Postale, or the Carabinieri they will take a report, but it ends there - no refund, no punishment for the thieves, no hassle for the state or Poste.
The moral of this story is: If you want easy money, and an easy life become a thief in Italy. If you aren't cut out for that then try being a banker. If that's not an option then work for the government.
