I think I might try this as a detergent. I didn't know baking soda had so many uses. Thanks for the advice. :)

Growing up in Florida, where it is hot a LOT, we always put it in the bathwater because it helped to alleviate heat rash.

for brushing teeth, just wet the brush and sprinkle it on or put a small amount in a personal container and dip tooth brush bristles in

For laundry, do you use baking soda only as a detergent or with something else?

also use straight vinegar in rinse cycle in lieu of fabric softener/sheets.....
for exfoliating, mix baking soda into facial cleanser to form a sort of paste. You can mix it with any natural body/facial cleanser

Also if you have any problems with sweaty feet or "athlete's foot", put a tsp. of baking soda in each shoe and shake it around, once every two or three days. I do this and haven't had any problems with itching or sweatiness with my feet since I started...

forgot this one because thoughts of mosquitos and bees are put away right now but a paste made from baking soda and water applied to bug bites and stings is effective for relieving itching and pain.

Hi. I think baking soda baths haven't been discussed here.
I'm bringing this up because i bought a baking soda and in the box it said that it was also good for a "relaxation bath". So i did a quick search on the web, but couldn't find anything telling of a continuous use (like one day, two days a week), but found remarks that it could be used for a detox bath with sea salt mixed. As for the ingestion there is a limit,

Do not use the maximum dosage for more than 2 weeks.

does anyone know if there is a recommended limit for the bath, or has anyone tried to have baths with it?

I too have been searching this forum for info on detox baths. I did find a web site, and wanted to clarify.

The web site suggested 1-2 cups epsom salt, 1 cup baking soda, and either a teaspon of ground ginger, or 1/3 cup ginger tea. I am basically searching this forum to see how others do it, and what if anything to avoid. So far, other than the use of ginger, it seems everyone on here uses these ingredients for quite a few things. Oh, the web address is here, but I do not know much disinfo resides here

Re baking SODA vs baking POWDER: just read the labels, it's all written!

I use bicarb frequently in my drinking water, to brush teeth and to put on mozzy bites, works really well!

As Mark Sircus says, it's a valuable commodity to have stashed away, as it also can be used in medical emergencies of the type that might befall us in the near future, like radiation poisoning, ingestion of toxins etc.
He sells an ebook that has a lot of information on bicarb that is interesting.

Overlooked 150 Year Old Household Cleaner a Remedy for Swine Flu?
December 15 2009

In a 1924 booklet published by the Arm & Hammer Soda Company, the company starts off saying, “The proven value of Arm & Hammer Bicarbonate of Soda as a therapeutic agent is further evinced by the following evidence of a prominent physician named Dr. Volney S. Cheney, in a letter to the Church & Dwight Company:

“In 1918 and 1919 while fighting the ‘Flu’ with the U. S. Public Health Service it was brought to my attention that rarely any one who had been thoroughly alkalized with bicarbonate of soda contracted the disease, and those who did contract it, if alkalized early, would invariably have mild attacks.”

Recommended dosages from the Arm and Hammer Company for colds and influenza back were:

During the first day:
Take six doses of half teaspoonful of Bicarbonate of Soda in glass of cool water, at about two hour intervals

During the second day:
Take four doses of half teaspoonful of Bicarbonate of Soda in glass of cool water, at the same intervals

During the third day:
Take two doses of half teaspoonful of Bicarbonate of Soda in glass of cool water morning and evening, and thereafter half teaspoonful in glass of cool water each morning until cold is cured

This regime has worked for me recently to beat a cold, in fact it's miraculous. On the past few occasions I have had a cold I have taken huge doses of ascorbic acid and it seems to have reduced the severity of the cold but not dramatically. Bicarbonate of soda stopped it almost completely within 24 hours while many of my colleagues had several days off work, some of them are still sick. I didn't have chance to take any when the symptoms first started, I had to wait a few hours, so perhaps I could have avoided any significant symptoms at all. Obviously comparing colds is an inexact science because of many factors.

While I don't get colds nearly as often as I used to before I started supplementation/dietary changes they are still a real pain when they do happen so this is a revelation to me. Now I feel like I can stop any cold in its tracks!

Good ole arm and hammer baking soda. We always have a big bag of the stuff here for flu, asthma, occasional heartburn and general household cleaning. Changes in the diet eliminated the heartburn but the baking soda is a must have. Growing up we used it it for brushing our teeth, cleaning pots, doing the laundry and cleaning the bathtub. It is very useful
