Beautiful Art: architecture, paintings, sculptures, etc

I really like John Waterhouse

"John William Waterhouse RA (6 April 1849 – 10 February 1917) was an English painter known for working first in the Academic style and for then embracing the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood's style and subject matter. His artworks were known for their depictions of women from both ancient Greek mythology and Arthurian legend."

here's a slideshow of most of his work

"The Ninth Wave is an 1850 painting by Russian-Armenian marine painter Ivan Aivazovsky. It is his best-known work. The title refers to an old sailing expression referring to a wave of incredible size that comes after a succession of incrementally larger waves."

And I did a quick search, realizing I know very little about eastern and asian architecture, but I have always found it fascinating. I found the Himeji Castle in Japan

And the Pagoda Temple in Japan

Two monumental contemporary sculptural icons of the UK.

Angel Of The North - situated in the North-East of England by sculptor Anthony Gormley. 20 metres tall with a wingspan of 54 metres. The public originally disliked it intensely but it seems to have settled itself into the public consciousness now and most opinions of it are positive. Personally I think it is great.

The Kelpies - Monumental sculptures of two horses heads - 30 metres tall - situated in the Falkirk region of Scotland. They represent the heavy horses of former Scottish industry but are named after shape shifting water spirits (kelpies). The sculptor Andy Scott modelled the heads from two actual working Clydesdale horses Duke and Baron who attended the opening ceremony in 2013. They look fabulous when illuminated in different colours at night.
