Blakes Adventures – The Americas ...

This is an extension of my last book ‘Swashbuckler’, I took a character and had him follow three men of past times that have always intrigued me, Magellan, Drake and Cortez … and I had a little fun along the way. This story starts in 1819, here is the prologue …

Prologue …

Magellan left Spain in 1519 with a note in his hand, it showed a crude map and these words, ‘Joie de vivre luminaris aperi hanc ianuam’, written in blood. Funny thing was the map ended at the bottom of Cape Horn bypassing the Mares Mortales as it was called at that time. But the map showed a passage there, a way to cross the horn without going around the world saving weeks and many times months.

His interests were not for a shortcut although he did use it … but in the narrow passage he found what he was lead here for, the map lead to a portal of all knowledge hidden away for centuries. And whatever knowledge Magellan gained, he used as he went straight there to it in Brunei a small country at N5°, E115°. It is said that Magellan died near here, this is true, but he found something before he did, it was so important that he has his man Del Cano cut the skin from his arm that held the second half of the map. Del Cano returned to Spain with both pieces, stories were told and the evidence was quickly stored in a dark corner of the lower chambers of an unnamed castle. The true history of this event was cleansed and documented ... but what happened was that Del Cano immediately went mad, he hung himself in his cell, but even that was debatable. And Magellan got his name on a permanent feature of this world. How is it that you have to die to get your name on anything.

Then along came the young Drake over fifty years later, he had a man get inside, it took him six years to get the trust … he eventually found the secret and stole the two pieces. He immediately returned to Drake … and because Drake didn’t want to touch them … he had the thief put them in a lead chest.

That night the man burst into flames and died … men saw it … and it barely burnt his bed he laid in.

This started Drakes hunt, what all the stories say, why he was out there at this time, what he was looking for, it’s not accurate even from the standpoint in metaphor.

In this box was the two items, one small map and the actual skin of Magellan showing another … there was one item … the skin wasn’t dead. Drake thought that this was a sign that for him to do what Magellan did, he would have to disguise himself and appear as him. And to do this he would have to become one with him and this part of him was the still living skin.

Even before he left port, he carried the two pieces in the box everywhere he went, it was even noted many times that he talked to it … openly. It talked Drake into what it wanted, it lied to him to go and have the patch attached … and it knew just where to get that done. Now was this Magellan coming back from the dead to haunt another Captain, it was highly unlikely, someone else was in control here.

So this was Fate as Drake made one stop when he left Great Britian in the north of Africa to Casablanca and a man in a cellar three floors down in the old city. Drake opened the lead chest and both men looked down into the relics, the skin was the interest this time. And as they looked the skin pulled into at hump and it leapt toward him.

The man caught the skin with a pair of grips and brought it in to look at … it was definitely still alive … then he did surgery on Drake … and magic so it wouldn’t kill him … it’s one of those things … it’s amazing what you can live through … this was sheer pain … an enduring torture that would never end.

And it drove him to push his crew all the way to Cape Horn without stoppage, even at the Verde islands unlike what the stories said. That was because the islands in 1577 were under Portuguese control … yes they were allies with Great Britian but at this moment Spain was pressing dynasty control, that meant England was not associating with them until way after 1580, he would have been unable to stop on either passing.

Now Drakes mistake was to attach the still living tissue of Magellan to his arm for he didn’t need it in the end, he was being cursed from the start of this trip and he did it to himself. He found what Magellan found in the narrows just inside the Strait of Magellan on his own using the map only … but he didn’t want what Magellan did, in fact he didn’t care one inkling. He had his own ideas to follow … but the fact that he attached another to his soiled his soul for the rest of his life, there were times that it worked on its own, like when he slept.

It is known that this world has a visible side that we call an ‘Illusion of Physicality’ … and other sides that number into absolute infinity. We see the visible side … only a minuet fraction of a percent of the souls here can see the others. There are ways through, like stepping through a mirror but you’ve got to have faith, this is what gets most stuck in between here and the other.

No one knew exactly where he ported but it was known that Drake made several stops on the west coast of South and Central America before stopping on the west coast of the America’s, the exact location was unknown, but there were stories of this from a second hand perspective, it was obviously done to hide the real location. After this he made stops all over the East Indies almost circling to find this treasure. He returned to England near the end of 1580 with two more stops in Africa.

Now you can imagine that the Spanish were on his tail as soon as he left England, keeping up with him was another thing as he was driven. They caught up with him in the East Indies, many a Spanish ship was disabled, treasure removed and then sunk, the man could drive a battle, I tell you what.

He did come home with treasure, although the one he truly found … he left behind him … as it was too much for any one person to own. But what he took with him was the knowledge that he kept to himself … if people knew what’s truly here … what we’re all here for … half the world’s population may just commit suicide because they would all ‘Acquire the Jonesy’s’, you get me.
