Mathis’ take on the counter culture of the 60’s was that it was of the machinations of the financiers who wanted change in order to fill their deep pockets of greed, and that they had been for decades battling old money. New structures designed to create new markets were their aim.
Considering that the US government process is run by money it makes sense that those behind the scenes were in control and co-opting cultural figures at the time, and not the government.
What they didn’t count on, I guess, is that they also created ample opportunity for normal creative people to protest against war and greed with a much wider exposure.
