I see that Iran is now refuting the claim that they fired the two missiles at the US military base on Diego Garcia - see:
Did Iran launch missiles at US-UK base on Diego Garcia? Here’s what to know
The Iranians have similarly disclaimed responsibility for firing missiles into Turkish territory too. If Iran had been behind the missile launches aimed at Diego Garcia, then I think they would have been quick to let the world know that it was them since it would have shown that they do indeed have the capability of hitting the base even though it is over four thousand kilometres away.
If it was not Iran, then who did fire the missiles? My guess is that it was Israel since the IDF have been very quick to point out that major European capitals, including Paris and London, are now in range of Iranian ballistic missiles. Israel possesses several German made diesel electric submarines that are capable of firing cruise missiles and it does, of course, have its own stock of ballistic missiles. By emphasising that the Iranians have the capability of hitting London and Paris, Israel might be trying to exert indirect pressure on Britain (which still owns the island of Diego Garcia for the time being, as the treaty transferring sovereignty of the Chagas Islands to Mauritius has not been approved by Parliament yet) and France to draw them more directly into the conflict so as to widen the number of participants in their illegal war.
A UK government minister has since gone on record to state that there was "
no specific assessment that the Iranians are targeting the UK - or even could if they wanted to", after the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said on Saturday that Tehran had weapons that could reach up to 4,000km (2,485 miles) - see:
No assessment Iran capable of striking London, Steve Reed says
There have been conflicting reports recently that Saudi Arabia and Qatar have arrested Mossad agents who were planning bombing campaigns in their territories with the aim that Iran would be blamed for the attacks. Renowned US reporter
Tucker Carlson has been drawn into this debate when on his podcast programme he questioned Israel’s motives, asking: "
Why would the Israelis be committing bombings in Gulf countries, which are also being attacked by Iran?" He added, "
Aren't they on the same side?" Carlson claimed that "
Israel wants to hurt Iran, and Qatar, and UAE, and Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain, and Oman and Kuwait," arguing that Israel deliberately foments instability among Washington’s Arab allies.
In February, Israeli security authorities briefly detained Carlson and his production team in Tel Aviv after he conducted an interview with Washington’s ambassador to Israel,
Mike Huckabee.
During that interview, Huckabee said that Jews have a “divine right” to colonise Palestinian land and rejected the idea of a distinct Palestinian national identity.
The exchange came after a public disagreement between the two men online. Carlson had criticised Israel’s "shocking" treatment of Christians and accused Huckabee of not doing enough to protect Christians who have faced attacks from illegal Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank and Jerusalem.
In 2025, following a visit to Palestinian refugees from Gaza in Qatar, where he highlighted Israel's murdering of children, a US-based pro-Israel advocacy organisation labelled Carlson its “Antisemite of the Year”, citing his opposition to Israel’s genocide in Gaza.
