I think the problem is that as society in general literally falls apart, fewer and fewer people want to look at it. They'd rather go nuts along with everyone else. Or, they'd rather "think positive" and ignore stuff more than ever.
Scottie, I saw a headline about this case a few days ago but I must say I was postponing looking further into it because I knew it would make me disgusted and angry, as indeed it did.
I don't know if Brazil has the death penalty, but in this case they should. Absolutely vile. What the hell were they thinking, doing a DIY sex op on a child? And then murdering him, as if the initial crime wasn't terrible enough? I'm pretty much lost for words, that poor kid didn't stand a chance.
What chance that the Brazilian justice system is ready to punish these psychos? I'm gonna keep my ear to the ground for any follow up news on this hideous act.
SlipNet, Brazil doesn't have the death penalty except for war crimes and it was last used in the 19th century.
Both women are already in prison, up to 30 years. I'm going to translate below some pieces of news about what is known so far.

The Public Prosecutor's Office of the Federal District and Territories (MPDFT) denounced the confessed murderers of Rhuan Maycon da Silva Castro, 9 years old, for qualified homicide, extremely serious bodily injury, torture, concealment and destruction of corpses, besides procedural fraud. The child was stabbed at home by his own mother, Rosana Auri da Silva Cândido, 27, and by his stepmother, Kacyla Priscyla Santiago Damasceno, 28. The crime occurred in Northern Samambaia on May 31.
In order to fully accept with the complaint, the MP understood that the accused planned the execution and destruction of the boy's body. Rosana was responsible for the first blow to her son's chest, who woke up with the attack. Kacyla held the child so that the companion would continue to carry out the stabbing. After the barbaric aggression, the mother beheaded the boy still alive.
In order to hinder the investigation, the women decided to chop up, pierce the eyes and remove the skin from Rhuan Maycon's face. Rosana and Kacyla also tried to set fire to the body, but gave up because of the smoke. Then, they put the body parts in a suitcase and two backpacks. The mother dumped one of the bags, throwing it in a manhole near the residence of the crime. The action drew the attention of local residents, who called the police. They ended up caught in the act.
Among the qualifiers of the homicide described in the document are the vile motive, the use of cruel means and the victim's impossibility of defending himself. In a statement to the police, Rosana claimed that she committed the crime because of the hatred she felt towards the child's paternal family.
Other crimes
Rosana Auri and Kacyla Priscyla were also indicted for torture and extremely serious bodily injury. The crimes are in reference to the mutilation of Rhuan Maycon's testicles and penis. The barbarism occurred a year before the murder, in the house where the couple lived with the victim and Kacyla's daughter. The women performed the procedure without anesthesia or medical follow-up.
The couple had been living illegally with Rhuan and his foster sister since December 18, 2014, when they ran away with the children from the state of Acre. During all these years, the women subjected the boy to physical and mental suffering as a form of punishment. The two children did not keep in touch with other people or went to school.
The case generated revolt and indignation in the Federal District and throughout the country. President Jair Bolsonaro even commented on the murder of the child in his Twitter profile. Actress Isis Valverde also lamented the death of Rhuan Maycon by Instagram.
On Saturday (15/6), the rearing sister of Rhuan Maycon left the shelter of Brasilia to live with his father and stepmother in Acre. She will be accompanied by state professionals.

According to PCDF, while her mother began cutting up the body after she murdered the child, Kacyla Priscyla Santiago Damasceno, 28, her lover, lit the barbecue to burn it, in order to get rid of the evidence. She would also have held the boy during the stabbing.
At a press conference, coroner Christopher Diego Beraldi Martins said the mother removed all the skin from the child's face before being put on the barbecue to be thrown in a toilet. The woman also tried to remove with a knife the eyeballs of Rhuan, in order to make recognition by the police impossible.
The reports are that after the attempt to roast Rhuan's chest, head, legs and arms, the women gave up when they realized that the flesh was not detached from the bones, as they hoped would happen. That's when they decided to divide the body parts into two children's backpacks, one of which was thrown into a manhole in the 425th Quadra of Samambaia.
A year before the murder, the women would have had a homemade surgery to reverse sex in the boy, cutting off his penis. Then they fled from city to city so that the crime would not be discovered, until the mother cruelly attacked the child and tried to get rid of the body.

Rhuan's father reveals that the boy was diagnosed with autism and therefore needed special care to attend school. When she finally got the medical referral to request special attention to her son, Rosana disappeared from the map with him. Rhuan would start his studies in 2015, but a year earlier, the mother took him and no longer allowed father and son to see each other.
After the arrest, Rosana declared that the death of the boy was "necessary" to forget a time of abuse and aggression coming from the boy's father. "Before she left here, she had denounced me for assault, but she never went to any hearing," he says. The position of the boy's maternal grandmother became clear in the legal battle for custody of the child. "Her mother helped me, she knows who I am, I've never done anything bad for her," adds the man.
Despite a history of confusion with Rhuan's mother, Douglas admits that Rosana behaved like "a normal person". At least until she entered the evangelical church, where she met Kacyla. After joining her companion, an accomplice in his son's murder, she "transformed herself; she went completely mad". He remembers that even the boy's clothes were the target of Rosana's religious fanaticism. "She set fire to Rhuan's clothes, because it had some drawings, a child's thing, which she considered 'of the devil,'" says Douglas, with his voice in lint.
But Rosana's impetus was not limited to her relationship with her son - dead, burned and cut up by her. When Rosana's own mother took Douglas' side in the dispute for custody of the boy, "she threatened to set fire to her mother's house too; very sinister," recalls Maicon.
Although he recognizes the boy's mother's imbalance, he questions Kacyla's attitude after the arrest. "She was always the mentor and Rosana accepted. Kacyla tries to take hers off the line, in all interviews she throws the blame only on Rosana," he criticizes. "There was no evidence of (this behavior). She didn't proceed with this madness, she only went to burst when she met Kacyla."
...
Eliana also corroborates the version given by Douglas. According to her, her brother was the victim of "slander and lies" in Rosana's cases against the boy's father. Another reinforced point was the behavior of Rhuan's mother. After the beginning of the relationship with Kacyla, or "until this damned woman appears", in Eliana's words, "Rosana changed from water to wine".

According to criminal lawyer João Henrique Lippelt Moreno, the sentence can vary from 12 to 30 years for aggravated murder and from 1 to 3 years for concealing a corpse.

Part of Kacyla's testimony with subtitles:
loreta, I couldn't have said it better. It is so deeply disturbing to me that a mother could do this to her own son. Such a sweet looking boy, and what horrific abuse, and the fact that his father knew something was not all well in that household, tried to alert authorities but to no avail. Oh my, society is sinking to ever lower levels of Hell.
That moralistic snapback as suggested by the Cs can't come fast enough.
Arwenn, I think part of that moralistic snapback is already underway. Being openly and staunchly against gender ideology is one of the loved/hated aspects of Bolsonaro (new president), depending on where you stand on that issue. One of his sons explicitly mentioned this case in connection with gender ideology and Bolsonaro himself tweeted about it:
Jair M. Bolsonaro
@jairbolsonaro
The shocking case of the boy Rhuan, who had his genital organ cut off and was cut up by his own mother and partner, is one of the many cruel crimes that occur in Brazil and makes us think that unfortunately our constitution does not allow life imprisonment.
94.7 thousand

And a legislative bill (Projeto de Lei Menino Rhuan) was proposed because of this crime:
The brutal murder of a nine-year-old boy shocked the country and prompted deputies to present a bill (PL) that typifies the so-called gender ideology as qualifying for murder. Experts heard by Sputnik Brazil criticized the fact that the bill was made in the "heat of the moment".
...
Federal deputies Eduardo Bolsonaro (PSL-SP), Carla Zambelli (PSL-SP) and Bia Kicis (PSL-DF) presented a bill to the House of Representatives to increase the maximum sentence for criminals to 50 years. The text bears the name of "Boy Rhuan", and the penalty is also provided for deaths allegedly caused by the so-called "gender ideology".
The so-called "gender ideology" is an expression used by critics of the idea that genders are social constructions. For researchers of gender studies there is not only male and female gender, but a spectrum that can be much broader than the identification only with male and female. {We can guess the author's opinion...}
