Two articles about the snowfall in Brazil this week. The first one is more comprehensive and the second is about Curitiba where the last snowfall was 38 years ago.
Cold winters are common in Southern Brazil but this one is very unusual as we can see from this post translated from _www.metsul.com, a meteorology website from Southern Brazil which seems to be way ahead of other meteorology services in the country. Maybe the post could be included on Sott too as it has more up to date information. The post is from Alexandre Aguiar:

Spectacular and memorable snowfall entered the history of southern Brazil
An event never to forget! Memorable! 22 and 23 July 2013 definitely entered into the history of climatology in southern Brazil. In an era where information about global warming is overflowing and experts go so far as to suggest a “tropicalization“ of the South of Brazil, the three southern states were hit by a snow and cold episode as seldom seen in the last half century. Scenes and unusual facts, typical of cold countries, such as roadblocks by excess of snow/ice, or collapsing roofs by heavy snowfall were in the news which only days before were asking where was the winter due to high temperature that exceeded 30ºC. A survey from MetSul Meteorology, based on its own measurements and data from Ciram, Simepar and the National Institute of Meteorology, indicates that it snowed in at least 140 cities in southern Brazil. In Rio Grande do Sul snow fell in at least 20 municipalities between Monday (22) and today (23). In Santa Catarina, a survey by Epagri/Ciram indicated more than 90 cities. And in the state of Paraná, according to the Simepar Institute, snow was observed in at least 30 municipalities. Besides snow in Paraguay and the province of Misiones in Argentina, there were reports of snow even in the town of Paranhos, in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, in the Center-West region of Brazil, where locals say that the phenomenon was not observed for more than 40 years.

“Should greatly disrupt agriculture”
The mass of polar air that passed through Argentina before coming to Brazil at the end of last week dropped snow in at least 87 cities of Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul.
The cold wave, which reaches South, Southeast, Midwest, and up to two northern states of the country (Rondônia and Acre), is the longest in 13 years, according to the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet).
“Should greatly disrupt agriculture”
“There were 17 days in all. Now, there are already seven days with temperatures below zero, and certainly this will continue until Friday, which should greatly disrupt agriculture, especially citrus plantations and lettuce, and bring problems health,” says meteorologist Lucia Gularte of Inmet.
Among the places hit by the snow are two capitals: Curitiba and Florianópolis. In Curitiba, the record snow made on Tuesday by Simepar Meteorological Institute is the first since 1975.
Snowflakes and freezing rain were seen in several neighborhoods of Curitiba, and in cities such as Araucaria, Campo Largo, Lapa and Pinhais, including the Afonso Pena International Airport.
In Santa Catarina, Epagri / Ciram snow recorded in the region of the Morro Cambirela in Palhoça, in Florianópolis. It is the first occurrence of the kind in 29 years, also seen in other cities in the metropolitan region, as Alfredo Wagner, Angelina and Burnt Ranch, and several parts of the state.
Altogether, at least 57 cities in Santa Catarina had snow.
Trees frozen
Until 6:30 this Tuesday, the lowest temperature was in Bom Jardim da Serra, in the mountainous region, with -7 ° C. In São Joaquim, in the same region, did -4 ° C, leaving frozen trees.
Snow in the South also closed federal highway (BR-116, BR-280 and BR-282) and state (SC-350, SC-390 and SC-280) in Santa Catarina, because of ice buildup on track.
Also, snow and extreme cold caused cancellation of classes at San Joaquin. A homeless man died in Biguaçu, in Florianópolis, due to the cold. And two cities in the state – St. Joachim and St. Joseph, in Florianópolis – are in an emergency situation to purchase blankets and supplies to the poorest families.
Largest snowfall in decades
According to weatherman Marcelo Schneider of Inmet, the snowfall in Santa Catarina and Paraná is one of the largest in decades. In some cities, such as Curitiba, the last occurrence was 38 years ago.
“The accumulation of snow in southern Paraná is also rare. So what draws attention is the duration of cold days, the permanence of the polar air and snow, not the absolute minimum temperature,” explains Schneider.
Cold in the Midwest and North.
“In midwinter, São Paulo had not yet downloaded 10 ° C. And in 70 years, this only happened five times here. Reached the windchill 6 ° C,” says Schneider. What draws attention is the low maximum temperatures, around 11 ° C between this Tuesday and Wednesday.

CURITIBA – For many Curitibanos, the snowy scenes of July 1975 often spring to mind during a period of particularly cold weather. For many inhabitants of the Cidade Verde, these memories became reality once again this Tuesday, whilst others were able to witness snow for the first time.
The snow lasted just a few minutes, but this was enough to leave hats and coats covered in little white flakes. The Meteorological System of Paraná (SIMEPAR) confirmed the occurrence of light snowfall in certain neighbourhoods of Curitiba, as well as sleet across almost the entire city. It also snowed in Araucária and São José dos Pinhais, both within the metropolitan area.
The snow was caused by a cold air mass hanging over the region and according to Climatempo, the temperature dipped as low as 1°C at around 8am. It was the coldest day of the year and it has been several years since the city has witnessed a period of such intense cold weather. There was little activity within the city centre as few were willing to risk going out in the cold and rain, whilst those who had no option but to do so were forced to wrap up and equip themselves with thick coats and umbrellas.
During Monday night, the BR-277 highway, which connects the coastal town of Paranaguá to Foz do Iguacu, was closed down by police authorities due to the snow and the risks that it could pose to drivers. The road has been re-opened, but it is still icy and the Federal Highway Police (PRF) has issued warnings to motorists.
