Can you see the Moon tonight ...

... and tell me if you also see two "stars" forming a perfect triangle with it, moving through the sky?

Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this, I was thinking "What's on your mind?" but it's outer space I guess.

It's almost 9PM here, and at around 6PM when it became night-time I looked up while having a smoke and after a while I noticed "Hey, that forms a triangle" [point down]

MOON *

*

I came back now and Holy Cow! All 3 moved in perfect synchronicity down as the moon is moving through the sky. It's almost at the bottom of the horizon and I will soon not be able to see the bottom star, so I wondered Hey? You foreigners over the over side of the world see anything yet? <--Cape Town

Yep, apparently there is this special event today:

CELESTIAL TRIANGLE: When the sun sets tonight, go outside and face west. There, splayed across the sunset sky, is a beautiful lesson in geometry. Venus, Jupiter, and the crescent Moon have converged to form a scalene triangle--a three-sided polygon with sides of unequal length.

You can use a free software called stellarium. It gives you the sky configuration in real tie from where you live. Here in the attached file is what I obtain (detail) for your location a few hours ago (sorry, the names are in French).

I saw this last night too, it was incredible! Stayed up late enough to see the moon dip below the horizon (mountains), it was very very cool to watch. There were two less bright stars that lined up as well to form a Z pattern. Very nice photo Keit.

Keit, your photo 'frame' consisted of a spiral with feathers attached to it.
What do you call that, and does it have a function?
An esoteric function, perhaps?

The triangle formed by the moon and planets will change on a daily basis, as they move in their orbits.

Well, the photo isn't mine. I took it from the spaceweather site. But apparently the creator of the art was indeed inspired by the event. It is also pretty, so that's probably its function. :wizard: :flowers:

Every time I see this Can you see the Moon tonight ... thread title in the list,
I always misread it as Can you feel the love tonight and start singing in my mind. :D
The Moon is inspiring, and so is the picture. :flowers:

Merci mkrnhr, pourriez vous donner le lien d'où vous avez pu tirer la photo avec le nom des étoiles en Français ?...

Merci aussi aux autres pour les belles photos de ce triangle de corps célestes...

Mkrnhr thank you, can give you the link where you could take the photo with the names of the stars in French? ...

Also thank you to the other for the nice pictures of this triangle of celestial bodies ...

I was thinking it looks somewhat like one of the native Indian 'dreamcatchers'.
Tonight I had a look at the show, and it is quite spectacular. Venus and Jupiter are quite bright, although the moon is on the top from my point of view on the planet.

Yes! I went outside last night to check it out and I'm glad I did. Very cool, thanks for the heads up.

Hello PERLOU,
I used a free software called stellarium. You can download it from here: _http://www.stellarium.org/fr/

Bonjour PERLOU, j'ai utilisé un logiciel gratuit, stellarium, que vous pouvez télécharger ici: http://www.stellarium.org/fr/

I was told they are more in a line tonight, however it was cloudy here so I missed it. Anyone see this?

Oops Keit, I see the photo wasn't yours, still well done though.

Mkrnhr thank you...
Je vais aller voir ce site de plus près... I'm going to see this site more closely ...
