Took me about 3 minutes. There is a great "eureka!" feeling brought by throwing away assumptions and see it! Very funny fun! :D

From the pre-school hint, I figured it was some visual property of the numbers. The number to the right of the equals sign is the number of loops in the 4 digits. It took me less than 10 but more than 5 minutes. Apparently, I am ready for kindergarten.
