The Living Force
The three photo's in this report of a massive fire at "an under construction condo development" in Fort McMurray’s Timberlea neighbourhood are interesting? A large "boom" was reported prior to the fire. Construction of the 156 units have been underway for about a year. I first thought, maybe a gas explosion but since it's still under construction, utilities might not be connected? The second photo looks like something slammed into the center of it? What a mess!

Friday June 27, 2014 - EDMONTON - A massive fire broke out at an under-construction Fort McMurray condominium development Friday afternoon, sending thick, black smoke into the Timberlea neighbourhood.

All contractors and employees working at the Siltstone Place project escaped without injury, the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo said in a news release.

The fire was under control by 3:30 p.m. Firefighters from Fort McMurray and the Saprae Creek Volunteer Fire Department were expected to remain on scene Friday night working on hot spots.

Fire crews from Syncrude and Suncor also provided support, as part of a mutual-aid agreement, the municipality said.

Ryan Arendt was eating lunch at his house when he heard a big boom.

“It couldn’t be ignored,” Arendt said. He ran outside and saw flames engulfing the building behind him, which he said crews have been working on for about a year.

“She was on fire pretty good,” he said.

Arendt said neighbouring homes were visibly damaged. He could feel the heat of the fire from his backyard.

The Siltstone Place project consists of 156 apartments split between two four-storey buildings, 15 townhouses and one fourplex building, according to the developer’s website.

Integrated Management & Realty Ltd.’s website says the buildings were to be constructed “with a mainly timber frame system.”

The cause of the fire and a damage estimate are not yet known.
