Castaway on the Moon

Rich

The Living Force
Really enjoyed watching this Korean film about a young heartbroken man's failed suicide attempt that leads him to live a life in the wilderness.

I particularly liked the realistic portrayal of how time and effort the man put in to survive was rewarded.

After failing to kill himself by jumping off a bridge, the man is washed up on a deserted island in the middle of the river, but within view of the city's high-rises. He attempts to escape, but soon accepts his fate and the challenges in living on the island. A reclusive young woman, who takes close-up shots of the moon and has not left her apartment in years, spies him on the island and comes to think of him as her own alien.

Thanks Gertrudes, I edited it.

I watched it 2 months ago found it very amazing, how people from Korea dealing with situations like this.
Will watch it again I think. Was funny somehow.

I watched this movie about a year ago. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I read now that there is an American remake in production for 2013 release... groan.

I enjoyed this movie, too. It's not your typical Hollywood trash, at the very least!

I thought this movie was really great. It has a 'stripped to the bone' story line and provokes some raw and simple emotions. Very humorous too. Would definitely recommend!

Saw it some days ago, too. It's very humorous and impressive. Specally the story of the young girl who is also somehow cast away and begin to interact with the guy on the island through messages in a bottle, a very creative idea. Definitely not Hollywood style but much closer to reality. I recommend it also.

I just watched it ,what an amazing and touching movie/story !

who needs Hollywood ??? hee?

it is one of those movies you never forget, and frankly "anti Hollywood" movies like this one who are done without much money and the other usual stuff are often the best ones like this one !

brilliant acting, story, music and filming!

Really a wonderful movie, like a breath of fresh air. Thanks for the recommendation!

Reminded me of another worthwhile South Korean movie: Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring

There seem to be some good and refreshigly different movies coming out of S. Korea, although they have their share of pathological produce as well, judging by the sadistic "Oldboy".

Agree with you there, absolutely loved Spring... when I first watched it. Love the simplicity, scenery, serenity as well as the depth of the message about life.

Always interested in non-Hollywood movies. Do you have any others in mind?

I have to admit that Spring, Castaway and Oldboy were my first foray in to Korean movies, but the first two were so great that it inspired me to start creating a "to watch" list of some Korean and other non-Hollywood, world cinema movies.

Couple of promising ones:

"Christmas in August", South Korea 1998

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0140825/

Synopsis from imdb:
Hahn Suk-Kyu suffers from a fatal disease. He meets Shim Eun-Ha and falls in love with her. What will be the fate of this love - will it be a tragic ending?

A review from imdb:
CHRISTMAS IN AUGUST is a perfect movie. A flawless movie about all the flaws of humanity. On the outside it may look like a movie about death, but is in fact a movie about life. I simply cannot recommend this movie enough. And be not afraid, dear readers, it is not a depressing film. As stated, it's a movie about the brightness of life coached under the guise of death. You will laugh. You will cry. You will realize that life is fragile and short. And you will leave the viewing with a better understanding of how precious life is.

Marathon, South Korea 2005

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0448621/

From a review:
This is a very warm and poetic film. It's about a mother's relationship with her autistic son and her insecurities regarding him, about his desire to run a marathon and how that relates to his relationship with his mother, and about how his running coach inadvertently helps to bring them together. It is one of the most touching films I have seen in many years.

Some other movies that look encouraging:

Ten, Iran 2002
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0301978/

Synopsis:
Ten, the latest film by Iranian master filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami, focuses on ten conversations between a female driver in Tehran and the passengers in her car. Her exchanges with her young son, a jilted bride, a prostitute, a women on her way to prayer and others, shed light on the lives and emotions of these women whose voices are seldom heard

Goodbye Solo, U.S.A. 2005
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1095442/

Synopsis:
On the lonely roads of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, two men forge an improbable friendship that will change both of their lives forever. Solo is a Senegalese cab driver working to provide a better life for his young family. William is a tough Southern good ol' boy with a lifetime of regrets. One man's American dream is just beginning, while the other's is quickly winding down. But despite their differences, both men soon realize they need each other more than either is willing to admit. Through this unlikely but unforgettable friendship, GOODBYE SOLO deftly explores the passing of a generation as well as the rapidly changing face of America.

Still Walking, Japan 2008

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1087578/

Synopsis:
Still Walking is a family drama about grown children visiting their elderly parents, which unfolds over one summer day. The aging parents have lived in the family home for decades. Their son and daughter return for a rare family reunion, bringing their own families with them. They have gathered to commemorate the tragic death of the eldest son, who drowned in an accident fifteen years ago. Although the roomy house is as comforting and unchanging as the mother's homemade feast, everyone in the family has subtly changed.

Hopefully the movies turn out to be as good as the reviews suggest :)
