I decided to do some research on PETA and came across this site.
PETA Kills Animals
_http://www.petakillsanimals.com/index.cfm
At first it was shocking and I was appalled. Then I started to dive deeper into the 'who's & what's' and the bigger picture emerged.
The first 2 articles under PETA Trial in the News where the only clues needed for major warning signals to go off.
» CCF op-ed in the Virginian-Pilot (Norfolk, VA) Written by David Martosko, Director of Research for the Center for Consumer Freedom.
» The Sunday Standard-Times (New Bedford, MA)
Written by MARC FOLCO, third place award winner for his sympathetic opinion on Vice President Dick Cheney's hunting accident.
I don't know if this case was a "one bad apple" issue or not. (I did not know PETA even took animals in or had shelters. And if they are not telling people the possible "killing' consequence of dropping off an animal, that is a shame and people should know. There are a couple of "no kill" shelters in my area so its a good guess there are more in a lot of other places.) But clearly this site and organization are using the case for their own agenda.
As you can see from above the first article is by the Center for Consumer Freedom the same owner of the PETA Kills Animals site.
In fact the Center for Consumer Freedom (_consumerfreedom.com) owns all of the sites listed below.

Against anti-meat groups--For meat, meat, meat and more meat.
Now its clear why they hate PETA.

They love High Fructose Corn Syrup.
To many examples to list, but this should give you an idea of most of the rest of their content. I did run into a couple of seemingly true facts but they were all wrapped with disinfo or used for their own agenda.
If your looking for a fairly concise case study of COINTELPRO and disinformation the Center for Consumer Freedom looks like a good place to go.

PETA Kills Animals

Animal lovers worldwide now have access to more than a decade’s worth of proof that People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) kills thousands of defenseless pets at its Norfolk, Virginia headquarters. Since 1998, PETA has opted to “put down” 21,339 adoptable dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens instead of finding homes for them.

The Center for Consumer Freedom is a nonprofit organization devoted to promoting personal responsibility and protecting consumer choices. We believe that the consumer is King. And Queen.
A growing cabal of activists has meddled in Americans’ lives in recent years. They include self-anointed "food police," health campaigners, trial lawyers, personal-finance do-gooders, animal-rights misanthropes, and meddling bureaucrats.
Their common denominator? They all claim to know "what's best for you." In reality, they’re eroding our basic freedoms—the freedom to buy what we want, eat what we want, drink what we want, and raise our children as we see fit. When they push ordinary Americans around, we're here to push back.
We believe that only you know what's best for you. When activists try to force you to live according to their vision of society, we don’t take it lying down.

Anti-Meat Propaganda Could Be Hurting Babies' Health
If you’ve ever wondered what harm could come from letting animal-rights activists play doctor, pay attention. At least one deceptive anti-meat group is encouraging pregnant women to go vegan, despite new evidence that it could increase their babies’ risk of serious birth defects.

Eliminating animal protein from your diet is a lifestyle choice and, for adults, it's just as legitimate as a meat-heavy diet.

The Organic Consumers Association (OCA) is another charter member of the organic-food-industry-funded smear campaign against genetically improved foods. OCA was founded by anti-technology zealot Jeremy Rifkin and originally bore the name “Pure Food Campaign.” Since changing its name in 1998, the group has been headed by experienced activist Ronnie Cummins, who has since brought his group and its neo-Luddite message into the Internet age.

A calorie is a calorie and a sweetener is sweetener. Period.
