Political assassinations are not new, but this is different because the victim is an "influencer" if I understand correctly. I don't know if it's a sad day in history because of this, hundreds of people are being murdered at the same time including kids. It will depend maybe on how it is politically recuperated.
So far, I don't buy the "he was going to say something disagreeable about someone so they assassinated him". In those cases in general the victim is quietly suicided. This is different because it's a public execution meant to provoke an emotional response and to construct a narrative around it. The organizer of a public assassination doesn't need to be on an "opposing side" if it serves its cause.
