When I moved to Spain a little over 2 years ago, I noticed the newmoon was "laying down", or looking like a Cheshire Cat smile. But only for one or perhaps 2 newmoons (I only remember 1), and then it was upright again. I thought one had to go further south (or south east?) for the moon to "lay down" and thought it peculiar that it was only for a short time..
This newmoon the Cheshire Cat smile is back, I don't remember having seen it last winter.
Is this something that happens every couple of years in southern europe?
