Chinese nationals arrested over murders

Police investigating the murders of two Chinese graduates have arrested three Chinese nationals.

A further 14 people, also Chinese nationals, have been held on suspicion of burglary and immigration offences following raids by Northumbria Police.

Xi Zhou and her boyfriend Zhen Xing Yang, both 25, were found hacked to death in their ground floor flat in Croydon Road, Newcastle, in August.

It later emerged Mr Yang might have made enemies after getting involved in an internet betting scam.

Of those arrested, two men, aged 30 and 22, were held after a raid at an address in Castle Close, Morpeth, Northumberland.

A third man, aged 33, was arrested in Dilston Road, Newcastle, which adjoins Croydon Road.

The inquiry has been led by Detective Superintendent Steve Wade who has made several appeals on the Crimewatch television programme.

He said: "As a result of ongoing investigations, officers from Northumbria Police Major Incident Team, together with specialist search officers and scenes of crime officers, executed search warrants at addresses in Northumbria and Durham.

"It is early stages and we have a lot of work to do but this is a positive development.

"Both families have been informed of these developments."
