Chronic constipation

Ok, she got a lot better for a few weeks after eliminating gluten from her diet, but the symptoms returned, so we saw a different pediatrician. I was suspecting about diary long ago, but couldn't make the desicion. What if I harm her instead of helping her as my parents did when forced me into vegetarianism? It was a big responsibility, but the doctor said kids are ready to stop having milk as soon as they're one year old, so here we are. She has mate instead of milk once or twice a day. Thankfully she loves mate, be it infusioned or from the gourd, so no problem with that. The doctor also prescribed a mild laxative, but she needed less than half a box because she's normalized! It's amazing what dairy can cause, pretty shocking!

Hi Skycsil,

I just read an interesting article on the dangers of fiber on the bowl, and the ensuing constipation that derives from such. Contrary to popular understanding.

Form what I can make of it - and the article provides this example - fiber is like "toilet paper", it expands when in the tract and can bank up.

Other problems mentioned:

- fiber husks irritate the walls and lining of the tract (over time), causing great damage
- fibrous matter in the tract blocking the uptake of necessary nutrients into the blood system

Fiber is also added as a "filler" to a lot of foods - eg, yoghurt, juices

Fiber is in fruits and juices naturally and cannot be processed ultimately. At first though, these foods give the impression that they get things moving but, it is not correct, it actually only makes the situation worse.

Hope I've paraphrased accurately. The article is here (I originally got it from another thread - maybe The Vegetarian Myth thread?):

http://www.gutsense.org/gutsense/chinashop.html

It's not a long article and it's provides humour in many parts.

Hope this helps.

Thanks iloveyellow, that's a very interesting article, it keeps you thinking about the things we give for granted, and how that directly harm us.
Fortunately, we eat mostly meat and a little veggies/fruit. Being Argentinean, we love meat, fortunately almost all meat is grass fed in my country, and little Sofia is now going to the bathroom on a daily basis (2 or three times a day sometimes).

Constipation -_-

I am approaching the 2nd week of this new diet plan but this one problem has arisen i.e. constipation and no bowel movement for days. Yes, it's very irritating because when I finally go to toilet I have to experience severe constipation. May be I am not eating much or missing out on something? Plus, this is making me aware of a hemorrhoid which I used to think is no problem at all until some two days ago.

I have checked the old conversations but I couldn't get the solution as I want to deal with it with diet and not any supplement/medicine type thing.

Help me! This is freaking me out as I once had an intestinal operation and it was really nasty :(

Re: Constipation -_-

Hi ifrakhaliq, did you read the thread "Life Without Bread"? the subject of constipation is talked in it d because it is something that almost everyone live when you start the Paleo diet. You should read the thread and will see how members are dealing with constipation. And you will also see that after some time the body will adjust and return to normality. But you have to read this thread, it is very important. :)

Re: Constipation -_-

The thread is way too long but I am reading the portion that deals with the constipation issues.

Yes, it is a very long thread but even if it is long you should read it entirely. Take your time with it, like me, but read it from the beginning. Every thing is related, and everything is very, extremely important, vital. I think so. And the book, with the same title, is also very important to read.

Re: Constipation -_-

Yes, will get my hands on this book right after my exams. Till then I am reading the thread.

Re: Constipation -_-

One thing that helped me a lot was trying not to be obsessed by constipation. I said try. ;) But knowing that others had the same difficulties concerning this subject and listen to them helped very much. Knowing that this is a step with this change of diet helps. Also what helped me was to take a glass of hot water first thing in the morning. Some Yoga exercises can be adequate for this condition and some massages on the belly (clock movements) before going to sleep. In homeopathia you have Nux Vomica for constipation.

For hemorroides what works only for me is a homeopathic ailment in drops: Prohämorrhin from the brand Dr. Reckeweg, R13. It takes out the inflammation right away!

I hope this can help a little.

I’m wondering why you went ahead with changes to your diet before having read and understood all the information before hand?

You were advised to read and understand these threads here:

…the rationale and amazing benefits (including the fact that you eat way less and thus have less impact on the environment) are all covered in the Ketogenic Diet thread. I realize that the "Life Without Bread" thread and the "Ketogenic Diet" threads are long and daunting, but the effort to get through them is worth it. You need to understand things before you try them.

Re: Constipation -_-

Yes, now realizing the mistake that I have already made :S

Will start reading it right away.

Re: Constipation -_-

I agree with loreta and Alada's points and would like to stress the importance of what they said, reading the related threads.

In the meantime, I noticed that constipation can still happen to me when I don't have enough fat, osit.
Hope this can help until you get through the threads and the books.

Re: Constipation -_-

You can take some magnesium and Vit. C to get things moving also. Are you drinking enough water too?

I agree, those things help and try to get the malate version of magnesium and take it on an empty stomach.
