Cold Sores

After reading up on olive leaf extract, I decided to use it to have another go at an anti-candida diet/protocol. Apparently, as well as being an anti-fungal, it's a natural anti-viral and is effective in dealing with cold sores.

http://www.oliveleafextract.com/herpes.html

I have recommened olive leaf extract to many patients with herpes. The results have been encouraging. One man in his early 40s suffered from repeated lesions plus fatigue. In a week after starting the supplement, his lesions disappeared and his energy level increased. He told me that olive leaf extract was the only preparation that had ever cleared up the herpes. "Even the most minute blisters are gone," he said.

A female patient had an unusually stubborn herpetic cold sore in the mouth for four months. She also suffered from cancer, thus there may have been some significant immune exhaustion involved. After one week with the olive leaf, the sore disappeared.

These and other similar clinical successes are consistent with a private 1993 herpes study in humans. In that investigation, a weaker and ethanol (alcohol-based) form of olive leaf extract was used by six individuals with herpes.

All reported symptomatic relief.

Three said their lesions disappeared within 48 hours. The remaining three, who experienced no improvement, then received a stronger dose. One said that three days later, most of the lesions were gone. The other two also reported doing better.

All six subjects said the olive leaf extract produced better results than Acyclovir, a medication they had previously used.

I have to say that when I've had a cold sore in the past, I've used 2% Aciclovir cream and it has shifted the cold sore within 24hrs.

Here's a link to a PDF version of a little booklet I was given by the owner of the owner of a health store:

Lucky to have an experience with cold sores only once, but recently on a doctor radio talk show heared that primary defense from cold sores is Vitamin F, which is fatty acids. If that's the case crank up on meats and such.

... a cold sore has just broken out. Experimenting with treating it with coconut oil – seems to be keeping it at bay, from spreading or breaking out, and so far seems to be reducing the size. Early days.

Reporting back, after applying coconut oil daily, the cold sore disappeared after two weeks - with no spreading or breaking out.

That's interesting Trevrizent. I recently suggested coconut oil to my daughter whose had to deal with a bad cold sore for the last couple months. After a few days of using the coconut oil I could see a marked improvement. But then she had to go back to her Mom's house where there was no coconut oil and it started to come back. The last I saw her it was starting to clear up some more, so maybe the coconut oil did help move things in the right direction?

Hi Vulcan59. I have no experience with cold sores but I assume you are referring to canker sores which form on the inside of the mouth and I believe are not related to the former(?).

FWIW, as a child I used to get canker sores regularly and even then, in my case, I think citrus fruits played a part. What worked 'overnight' for me was to go to bed with a zinc tablet between the open sore and the opposite gum and let it dissolve. By morning the sore would be gone.

Had similar results with a vitaminC tablet but the pain and resulting tissue damage was difficult.

It's been years since a recurrence, likely related to dietary changes.

Hope this helps.

Thanks cholas for the info. I had a look at mouth ulcers and canker sores and they both seemed to be caused by the same virus. Cold sores seemed to be slightly different although again, it is caused by the same virus. I'll remember to checked out the zinc tablet the next time it recurs. :)

considering the advice for internal use of the colloidal silver and it's antibiotic effects; is there any reference for how long or often this is safe, considering it would effect the numerous beneficial internal flora as well as the one you were trying to eliminate? My last use of antibiotic for a UTI, I used the probiotics daily, but still it seemed to be more than 2 weeks for the system to be back to normal. Can't find a specific reference on using the silver internally .

First, there is a world of difference in "colloidal silver" and the newer technology nano-catalytic silver hydrosols. For the sake of this post, I am discussing only the hydrosols, or sols for short - not older technology ionic preparations. These pure elemental silver preparations are completely non toxic. I have taken them nearly daily for over ten years with no negative side effects. Here is a page from my site dealing with safety. This also notes the research work done which demonstrates that the sols have no effect on beneficial gut flora (probiotics) - that study begins on page 33:
http://www.lifesilver.com/ABL_SafetyStudies.pdf

Here is the general overview safety page:
http://www.lifesilver.com/safety.htm

I once asked the Cs about why the silver hydrosols do not interfere with gut probiotics - September 3, 2008:

Q: (DD) Quick question about the probiotic thing. Why is [it] that this elemental colloidal silver doesn't disrupt intestinal bacteria?

A: Does not bind in the same way due to "shape".

Q: (DD) Yeah, well, we saw these TDM photographs that showed the shape, but it doesn't have anything to do with the negative particle charge as opposed to the positive charge of ionic silver? Does the positive particle charge, as opposed to the negative particle charge of ionic silver, have some effect that spares the probiotics?

A: Has some effect, but the main issue is the shape which does not fit the same binding site.

In the above statement there are a couple of mistakes. Don't know whether it is the way I worded the question or a transcription error.

The silver sols have a negative particle charge. The conventional ionic colloids have a positive particle charge. This positive charge is what makes ionic silvers readily able to bind with other biochemical compounds in the body creating silver salts, which greatly reduce their effectiveness.

Also, TDM photographs should read - TEM photographs (transmission electron microscopy).

Thank you so much for the answers and links!

Yes, I have read that article about close connection of cold sore virus with the possibility of Alzheimer and dementia disorders.

Recurrent cold sore infection and severe infection can cause nerve damage and that can affect dementia plaques in our brain. According to a recent scientific study conducted by Brown University, University of New Mexico and House Ear Institute, this cold sore virus easily gets replicated inside human cells. After some time, this virus continuously goes through the cycle of growth and re-activation which also leads to cognitive decline in human brain. This is what we should be more worried about.

If you do not want to risk your life then it is in your best interest to identify the best and proven _http://www.naturalremediesforcoldsores.com/cold-sore-remedies-discover-the-top-5-natural-remedies-for-cold-sores that can be implemented easily and effortlessly at your home. Most OTC treatments do come with some sort of side effects. So it is good idea to stay away from them.

The most proven natural cold sore remedies according to my experience are aloe vera, lemon balm, tea tree oil extract, ice, tea bags, echinacea, L-Lysine and arginine supplements along with zinc. Try any of these natural cold sore treatments after consulting with your doctor and try them regularly for nest few weeks. I am sure you will see the positive results very soon.

Welcome to the forum, jennyjackman, and thanks for the info.

It is recommended that all new posters drop by the Newbies Forum to post a quick 'hello' and introduction. This just helps to maintain a friendly atmosphere, in getting to know each other. It doesn't have to be anything long or personal, feel free to take a look at how others have done it for some ideas. :)

There is the following article that talks about cold sores being linked to a specific gene or group of genes and how it affects cold sores frequency and severity. And what I found interesting, that if cold sore appearance is related to genes activation or reactivation, and the chances of outbreak can be regulated through keeping the immune system in a good shape or through diet (as was discussed in this thread), then it's another example that shows the "plasticity" of genes' "turn on/turn off" system. There is also this article that talks about similar "DNA fickleness".

Study finds specific gene linked to cold sore susceptibility
_http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2011-10/idso-sfs102611.php

Investigators have identified a human chromosome containing a specific gene associated with susceptibility to herpes simplex labialis (HSL), the common cold sore. Published in the Journal of Infectious Diseases and now available online, the study looks at how several genes may affect the severity of symptoms and frequency of this common infection. The findings, if confirmed, could have implications for the development of new drugs to treat outbreaks.

HSL outbreaks, or cold sores, are skin infections that appear with the reactivation of herpes simplex virus, a virus that infects 70 percent of the U.S. population. Cold sore outbreaks vary in frequency and severity; some people may experience symptoms rarely, only once every 5 to 10 years, while others may experience them once a month or even more frequently. In addition to investigating environmental activating factors (e.g., sunlight) that may play a role in outbreaks, researchers for some time have been looking at the possible role of genetic factors in virus susceptibility and activation.

This study, led by John D. Kriesel, MD, and colleagues from the University of Utah School of Medicine in Salt Lake City and the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester, follows previous studies identifying a region of chromosome 21 as a base for genes possibly linked to cold sore outbreaks. To identify which of six possible genes in this region were associated with the frequency of outbreaks, this latest study used single nucleotide polymorphism genotyping in genome-wide, family-based linkage studies of 618 people from 43 large families. The investigators found a positive link between the frequency of outbreaks, hereditability, and the presence of a specific gene, C21orf91, on chromosome 21.

"While these findings await confirmation in a larger, unrelated population," the study authors note, "these findings could have important implications for the development of new drugs that affect determinants of the cold sore phenotype."

In an accompanying editorial, Anthony L. Cunningham, MD, and David Booth, MD, of the Centre for Virus Research and the Institute of Immunology and Allergy Research at Westmead Millennium Institute and the University of Sydney in Australia, note that if the findings regarding the C21orf91 gene are confirmed, additional research may then begin to determine possible therapeutic applications and whether the same gene also plays a role in recurring genital herpes.

I'll reiterate: dmso gets rid of the cold sore in just a few days. It also relieves the pain.

I think I remember iodine ticture too, transdermally, or topically in high dilution. Perhaps it is in Psyche's Iodine thread.

I have just had my first breakout of cold sores in many years. I had a paleo diet for quite awhile, and these types of ailment simply dissapeared for awhile. I used to be prone to them all my life, but now i have been eating very poorly, and even started eating proccessed foods, and gluten and dairy again. I have been trying to get back to my regular diet for a little while now, and damn it is true how addictive this stuff is. I got very sick a few days ago for like a 24 hour type of flu, which seemed to weaken my immune system enough for a massive outbreak. That and lots of sun the day before i believe. My triggers always seemed to be stress, and lots of sun, and/or indulhing in drug use. Funny how hindsight works. I wasnt sure my better diet was doing much for me, but i now i see how it had staved of these illnesses, and reduced my chronic pain conditions to almost nil.
I tried the dmso, but my question is i wonder if a mixture of dmso, and oregeno oil, or garlic, or zinc, and peroxide would work, or all of them together? Also i have peroxide from the drugstore, but how can one tell if it is food grade?

My wife just recently had a cold sore and as Laura stated...
dmso gets rid of the cold sore in just a few days. It also relieves the pain.
My wife used a cotton wool bud to apply and massage in the DMSO cream and hey presto, it started to clear up very quickly, (pretty much gone in 3 days) without any problems, particularly anymore surfacing.

I used to suffer from them myself regularly and on the odd occasional still do, but since checking my diet and working on any "issues" that surface they're FAR less frequent (my wife never got them until we got together :-[ and the same goes with my Mum not getting them before she met my Dad!) . The depression that comes with them doesn't help matters. Being overly concerned about one's appearance seems to play it's part too when suffering with a cold sore and again just adds to the problem. It can feel like a golf ball sitting on your face!
Now, whenever I do get the tingly feeling on my lips, I lick the area and although it doesn't sound like a good idea , the majority of the time they don't burst out into a full cold sore. I've read that licking them isn't a good idea, but it worked and still works for me if you catch them before they break out.

On top of the cold sores, I've had shingles twice! once when I was about 13 and then again at about 24 and the sense of deep depression that goes hand in hand with this virus is not pleasant, the feeling you get from a cold sore is magnified many, many times.

Yet since getting to grips with "the work",over the course of time that said depression is virtually non existent if any sores do appear and that seems to speed up the healing process.

Not to say there aren't moments of depression anyway, but that's another thread!

I agree that stress certainly plays it's part, but I've had them appear just by getting a bang or even a cut on my lip.

Of all the remedies so far, DMSO and in my particular case just as importantly, "the work" gets my vote.
