I was searching for Hi-Res onion pics and found this on Google. Clearly esoteric content. Hope he chose a real symbol.
Here is the sculptors website:

Interesting, to me it looks like a conscious "I" that can see the unseen (with the 3rd eye on its forehead and open eyes?) existing inside a sleeping/ignorant/blind exterior personality. Since the exterior personality is still there it seems like it's not a developed person, but there is a small essence that is being birthed.

Interesting indeed. There seems (to me) to be a comprehensive set of contrasts and distinctions:

two halves,
a single whole,
asleep, vs awake,
male (outer), female (inner),
3rd eye (1 + 1 = 2 where the 2 is something within a context that is greater than the sum of it's parts),
square chin vs ball chin,
the arch,
the various directions,
calm unconcern (male lips) vs slight amusement (female lips),
direct perception (female looking directly at the viewer)
inner female emerging (or at least about as prominent as the outer) male,
rough (male features) vs smooth (female features)
color (earth toned, yet seemingly half way between light and dark)
Even more can be seen
And all blended into a rounded kind of shape suggestive of a self-reflective totality (inner awareness as central pivot point?) I don't know...just my thoughts, fwiw.

Edit: clarity

It's a very interesting sculpture.

What stood out for me, that the outer eyes are closed and the inner eyes are open.

I can imagine a lot of things looking at that, but for the first look it is very ugly and unpleasant statue.

I really like this statue.

One thing that stood out for me and it is probably because I come from a middle eastern background is how the male part appears to be wearing an Arabic like turban. And how the masculinity is a prominent part in most middle eastern cultures. Yet the inner part of this man is female. It speaks (to me) as a man (who looks middle eastern) reaching to his inner femininity/sensitivity.

Noticed the 3rd eye thing also.
