In Britain, a seven-year-old girl was killed in Cornwall after a car crashed into a house in icy conditions, the BBC reported. Dozens of passengers were stranded on trains overnight in southern England.
The army was called in to help rescue hundreds of drivers stuck in the snow and to transport National Health Service workers. Roads were closed, schools shut and flights canceled across Britain.
“The Armed Forces are assisting emergency services in ensuring essential NHS staff are able to get to work and carry out their work in local communities,” a spokesman for the Ministry of Defense said.
The army is “standing by to help the Police and civil authorities across the UK following heavy snowfall. We are also aware of Armed Forces personnel volunteering in their own time with their own vehicles to help those in need.”

“This is particularly unusual weather,” British Transport Secretary Chris Grayling said. “It’s something that happens very rarely in this country.”
Up to a meter (three feet) of snow was reported in eastern Ireland, and travelers were stranded south and west of the capital, Dublin.
The big chill also froze canals in the Dutch capital, Amsterdam. Ice on the historic Prinsengracht canal was thick enough for residents to lace up their skates and glide across its frozen surface. Tourists without skates slid across the ice, taking selfies. “It’s just cool. You can go fast and you see the world from a slightly different perspective,” said skater Noldus Reijnders.
Heathrow Airport tweeted Friday that it was working with airlines to consolidate the flight schedule “to provide more certainty around departing flights,” amid the extreme winter conditions across the UK and Europe. More than 350 flights were canceled. Gatwick, London City, Edinburgh and Glasgow airports also reported cancelations.
Other European airports closed down entirely. Authorities at Geneva’s airport suspended air traffic for a second straight day amid heavy snowfall. By early afternoon, flights had resumed.
Around 340 flights were canceled at Ireland’s Dublin Airport, which posted images of swirling snow together with the hashtag “BeastFromTheEast.” It doesn’t plan to open until Saturday.

Commuter Philip Brown endured more than 15 hours on a train traveling from London Waterloo to Bournemouth, Dorset. The average time for the journey is about two hours. “I didn’t have any food or water. There were no buffet facilities on board. The train lost power and we lost heating and lights,” said Brown, 49. “I couldn’t tell you how cold it was, but it was cold enough to prevent you from sleeping ... People were wrapping jumpers round their legs trying to keep warm.”
But in Amsterdam, nobody was complaining about the cold. Residents on skates glided past tourists who slithered across the ice for pictures. One woman took her dog for a walk along the frozen canal.
Still, despite measures taken by authorities to help the ice develop, there were still some holes and parts of the canal weren’t frozen at all. Reijnders was wearing a special red ice pick around his neck just in case.

Numerous roads were closed due to debris, fallen trees and power lines -- including lanes on I-95 outside of Washington, D.C. Rail service across the Northeast was impacted significantly with Amtrak suspending all service on the Northeast Corridor line.
Several communities in Massachusetts are completely in the dark Saturday morning. There were 381,000 customers without power in the state as of 6 a.m. Widespread street flooding was reported in eastern Massachusetts with storm surge reported to be as high as 3 feet. Numerous water rescues were performed, especially in Quincy, Massachusetts, where the National Guard was performing rescues into the night.
Top rainfall totals came in East Bridgewater, Massachusetts, which received 5.74 inches, while Cobleskill, New York, set the high mark with 39.3 inches of snow. Barnstable, Massachusetts, saw the highest wind gust on Friday at 93 mph, while Boston saw a 70 mph gust and New York's JFK Airport measured one at 67 mph.
As the storm slowly pulls away, the primary concern Saturday morning is more coastal flooding from Virginia to Maine during the high-tide cycles.
The Boston Harbor rose to 14.67 feet on Friday, marking the third-highest on record there. Another high tide near 14.6 feet is forecast around noon today. Along Cape Cod, the high tide today will reach near major flood stage, and will once again be in the top-3 crests on record.
The radar and satellite Saturday morning is showing precipitation has moved offshore with only a few showers and snow bands left over the Northeast.
While the storm is several hundred miles away, wind gusts could reach 30 to 50 mph through much of the day Saturday across the northeast U.S., including all the major cities along the I-95 corridor.
The strong gusty winds will hamper recovery efforts -- especially in restoring power.
On Sunday, the storm is gone and winds will be even calmer.
Western storm dumping snow, rain - A strong storm system riding a frontal boundary is moving through the western U.S. on Saturday morning. It will bring more rain to the California coast and more snow from the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the northern Rockies.
Mammoth Mountain in California has recorded 48 inches of snow over the last three days. They could receive another foot before the storm moves out of the western U.S.
Additional snow totals of 2 to 3 feet are expected in the southern Sierra Nevada today. In Southern California, heavy rain is still possible on the hillsides. This could cause some flooding on streets. Snowfall totals up to 18 inches are expected in the highest elevations of Los Angeles and Ventura counties through Saturday.
Strong winds will move through Las Vegas today with gusts up to 65 mph.
Locally 6 to 12 inches of snow is expected in the northern Rockies over the next few days. The storm will then move to the central U.S. and bring more snow to the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest, where locally over 6 inches of snow is possible on Monday.

Flood warnings were issued on Saturday due to the melting snow, which in Scotland had led to snow drifts up to 10 feet (three meters) deep, according to ScotRail. While Ireland’s most severe weather warning was lifted, the government urged caution.
“Driving conditions remain treacherous due to ice and snow on the ground. We’re working hard to reopen roads and resume public transport. Please continue to take extreme care,” Prime Minister Leo Varadkar warned the public on Twitter.
Ireland’s main airports reopened, although over 50 flights in Dublin, mainly operated by Ryanair and IAG’s Aer Lingus, had already been canceled before snow and ice teams worked through the night to clear the airfield.
Public transport across Ireland was due to reopen with a limited service from 1200 GMT, while train operators were running half a schedule in Scotland, which initially bore the brunt of the Siberian cold front.
According to forecasters, Scotland was expected to see more snow on Saturday while they warned that flooding and icy roads could disrupt travel across the rest of Britain.

Five skiers were swept away by an avalanche in the French Pyrenees on Saturday, at the moment two people are listed as missing, while three skiers managed to get out on their own, CNews reports.
As specified by the LCI channel, three skiers managed to escape. At the moment, rescuers are preparing for an operation to search for the two who remain missing.
Earlier, four skiers were killed and another injured in an avalanche in the French Alps.
In the middle of February in the High Tatras mountains in Slovakia, two Polish mountaineers were avalanched. One of them died, another one has survived. The victim was taken to hospital in critical condition.

Five skiers were swept away by an avalanche in the French Pyrenees on Saturday, at the moment two people are listed as missing, while three skiers managed to get out on their own, CNews reports.
As specified by the LCI channel, three skiers managed to escape. At the moment, rescuers are preparing for an operation to search for the two who remain missing.
Earlier, four skiers were killed and another injured in an avalanche in the French Alps.
In the middle of February in the High Tatras mountains in Slovakia, two Polish mountaineers were avalanched. One of them died, another one has survived. The victim was taken to hospital in critical condition.

Earlier users had also told of inflated bread prices and bread rations recommended by some stores. Fresh food such as dairy, bread and greengroceries have disappeared from major stores over the past several days due to numerous accidents on local highways as the supermarkets are informing their customers.
The first witnesses about food breakdown appeared in the middle of the last week in the face of havoc on the roads and panic shopping amid the fears of being snowed in. Although the road situation was forecasted to improve by the end of the week, the food chaos remained on Sunday, leaving the local residents scared.
Meanwhile the chain Londis, has outraged shoppers by having raised prices by 2 times in these hard times as one Facebook user reported, they had to buy a loaf of bread for £3 instead of usual £1.40 and posted a receipt. The shop bosses have justified themselves by saying they had to pay extra money to suppliers for delivery in poor weather conditions.

Households across the UK were further inconvenienced as thawing snow burst multiple pipes, leaving tens of thousands of homes without running water.
After Storm Emma, around 12,000 homes are currently without water access or are experiencing very low-pressure levels in London alone, according to data released by Thames Water.
Londoners affected were understandably annoyed by the situation, taking to social media to express their concerns and annoyance, with many tweeting directly to water suppliers.
"We've seen an increase in leaks and bursts on our network, which we are urgently dealing with as fast as we possibly can. But the sudden and widespread surge in demand, coinciding with the rise in temperatures, means we also need to urge all our customers to check their own pipes for bursts and call a plumber if necessary. We are getting as much extra water into our network as we can and sincerely apologize to all our customers who are currently without water or who have low pressure," said Thames Water in a press release.
A small number of residents also reported power outages, though electricity providers are yet to confirm any supply disruptions.
Another 5,000 homes in Kent are experiencing similar problems with intermittent supply, in addition to thousands more across Wales. Water networks in other parts of the UK — including Birmingham, Nottingham and Derbyshire — have apologized to customers who were briefly left without water access, but added that most supply issues have now been resolved.
However, some suppliers have kept warnings in place and are advising customers to use water sparingly, as some parts of the UK are still experiencing shortages. Southern Water, which supplies much of Kent, urged customers to "only use the water you absolutely must."
"These problems are likely to continue over the next few days", said a Welsh Water spokesman.

Jupiter, Mars and Saturn are all visible with the naked eye, but Pluto is much dimmer and requires the use of binoculars or a telescope to see.
This can make Pluto difficult to find, but on March 12, the Moon will be sitting just to the left of the dwarf planet. The Moon will serve as a reference point for onlookers, making it easier to spot through a telescope.
Not only will those with a telescope be able to see Pluto, but also details of Jupiter and Saturn.
With a simple telescope or good pair of binoculars and a steady hand, stargazers focusing on Jupiter can spot its four largest moons; Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto.
The location of the moons will vary from night to night and some may not be able to be seen when they are passing in front of or behind the gas giant.
Those turning their telescopes to Saturn may be able to see the planet’s famous rings.

Another 200 flights have also been grounded for Thursday, according to flight-tracking service FlightAware.com. Airlines including United, Delta, JetBlue and American have waived fees for travelers impacted by the storms.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration, delays in major Northeast airports were 15 minutes or less as of Wednesday morning, but conditions are expected to worsen.
As of midday Wednesday, there is already six inches of heavy, wet snow in Exton, Pennsylvania, Weather Channel Meteorologist Mike Seidel reported.
Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf also urged people to stay off the roads on Wednesday as the nor'easter moves across his state and noted that the National Guard has been activated.
"We know the storm has shifted east and that's a good thing for many people in Pennsylvania, but it's still going to have a significant impact on the eastern third of our state. This is a powerful storm and conditions can change quickly," Wolf said at a Wednesday news conference.
Four inches of snow were recorded near Long Green, Maryland, on Wednesday, while two inches of snow fell in Wilmington, Delaware. In addition, 4.5 inches have already been reported in Greenville, New York, while four inches have piled up in West Milford, New Jersey.
The National Weather Service has issued winter storm warnings in northern Maryland, northern Delaware, eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey, central and eastern New York and the majority of New England, including Philadelphia, New York City, Hartford, Albany, Portland and the Boston metro area.
Winter advisories for lighter snow were issued in Baltimore, Providence and areas in upstate New York including Binghamton, Utica and Watertown.
Last week, Winter Storm Riley left more than 1.6 million homes and businesses without electricity. Thousands of flights were cancelled because of the storm and the state of Virginia declared a state of emergency. As Riley hammered the mid-Atlantic Friday morning, US federal offices were closed for the day in Washington, DC, and more than a million customers lost electricity in the region as a result of the storm.

There were no other reported injuries, Superintendent of Schools David Trethway said.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to our staff member and family and we are all hoping for a speedy and full recovery,” he said in a statement.

London: A fresh bout of snow on Saturday forced the cancelation of more than 100 flights in and out of London’s Heathrow Airport, with a bad forecast threatening further disruption.
Transatlantic flights were among more than 115 grounded so far, with British Airways canceling multiple domestic flights to Edinburgh, Glasgow and Manchester and services to European destinations.
“While this weekend’s weather may result in minor delays and some airlines consolidating flights, significant disruption at Heathrow is not currently expected,” said a Heathrow spokesman.
“We are working closely with our on-site Met Office to monitor the further snowfall expected throughout the weekend.”
The airport canceled scores of flights at the end of last month following the arrival of the “Beast from the East” snowstorm.

Valais cantonal police reportedly said that those missing were two French nationals and one Swiss.
According to a police representative, there are little chances of finding them alive.
Switzerland has experienced exceptionally high levels of snow this winter, which has raised avalanche warnings to the maximum alert in several areas.

In addition, a heavy snowstorm along the eastern coast of the United States led to the cancellation of almost 3,500 air flights, the flight-tracking website Flightaware.com reported on Wednesday.
As of 8:30 a.m. local time, 3,439 flights within, into or out of the United States were called off, the website said. Another 334 flights were delayed.
American Airlines canceled 447 flights. Republican called off 411 flights, and Jetblue grounded 402 others. Southwest reported 381 cancellations, while United listed 366.
More than 1,100 flights were canceled at three major airports around New York City. The Washington, DC area faced more than 300 cancellations.

According to experts, this phenomenon is actually not that rare, happening every five years or so.
Meteorologist Steven Keates from the British national weather service explains that the color change was caused by sand and dust blown up into the clouds from dry and desertous North Africa.
"There has been a lot of lifted sand or dust originating from North Africa and the Sahara, from sandstorms which have formed in the desert," Keates told the Independent.
"As the sand gets lifted to the upper levels of the atmosphere, it gets distributed elsewhere," he said.
"Looking at satellite imagery from NASA, it shows a lot of sand and dust in the atmosphere drifting across the Mediterranean. When it rains or snows, it drags down whatever is up there, if there is sand in the atmosphere [then it falls, too]," Keates added.
Other parts of the world are no strangers to colored snow (no, not like that) and other dust-influenced weather.
In January, residents of a town in central Kazakhstan claimed that pollution from the local iron and steel industry covered the snow in black ash.
In 2009, a dust storm covered the whole city of Sydney, Australia, in a red fog after strong winds from parts of inland New South Wales and South Australia blew in huge amounts of dust.

An unstable atmosphere and chilly temperatures triggered isolated hail storms around the Bay Area Monday morning.
The hail came down hard at about 7 a.m. in the East Bay and bits of ice were plentiful and collected on the ground, making it look as if it had snowed.
Many posted images on Twitter of the hail dusting the ground and cars in Oakland and Alameda.
One person shared an image of kids "sledding" down a hail-covered hill in Oakland; another person in Berkeley tweeted at 8:30 a.m., "Mung-bean-sized hail in Berkeley flats right now."
By 8:30 a.m. acres and acres of the Oakland Hills were covered in hail, creating a wintry scene.
The hail pounded Highway 13, the short loop through Alameda, causing traffic jams. Caltrans reportedly dropped sand on the road to prevent slipping.
At 8:15 a.m., a live webcam on the Richmond-San Rafael bridge showed a hail storm.
Scattered showers and thunderstorms, small hail, snow on mountain peaks, and gusty winds are all in the forecast for Monday morning and afternoon. The weather is forecast to calm in the evening.
