Lightning, Thunderstorms, Floods Killed 1,006 People in India in Under 2 Months

The Indian government has established a high-level thunderstorm expert group mandated to develop a high-resolution operational prediction system by March 2019. The ongoing augmentation of the Indian Meteorological Department’s observational network is expected to improve the mesoscale prediction system.

New Delhi (Sputnik): India's junior minister for home affairs, Kiren Rijiju, told the Parliament on Wednesday that in the pre-monsoon months of May and June, a total of 1,006 persons died, while 635 were severely injured, due to natural calamities including lightning, thunderstorms and floods.

Thunderstorms are a regular feature, especially during the pre-monsoon season (March-June), in India. This year, states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand witnessed a record number of thunderstorms, often accompanied by rain, violent winds, lightning and hail.

Many of the deaths (252) occurred in Uttar Pradesh while states like Odisha and West Bengal witnessed 171 deaths; mainly due to lightning.

Earlier this month, the Ministry of Earth Sciences had invited research proposals from universities and academic institutions to predict thunderstorms as the country's weather scientists have till now focused more on other areas like rainfall and climate change.

"The proposed augmentation of the radar network of the Indian Meteorological Department, especially over the northwest Himalayas, will also enable wider coverage under thunderstorm nowcasting," Harsh Vardhan, India's minister of earth science, said.

Well, if it is still snowing in the mountains, in July, we may very well have "sudden glacial rebound".

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Myrtle Beach experienced a waterspout Monday that briefly became a tornado as it reached the beach.
Video Shows Waterspout Make Landfall, Become Tornado in Myrtle Beach

Video shot by Chris Rivers and shared on his YouTube channel Outrageous Weather showed people watching the waterspout, then running for cover as it came to shore.

In the video, police sirens can be heard as officers tried to clear the beach.

No injuries were reported. No structures were damaged but some chairs and umbrellas were tossed around.

The tornado was classified as an EF-0.

Ed Piotrowski, a meteorologist with WPDE in Myrtle Beach, posted a photo showing the stark difference of Monday’s tornado compared to the 2001 Myrtle Beach tornado that injured 37 people and caused $8 million in damage.

Eurotunnel cancels thousands of tickets as UK prepares for 'Furnace Friday'
26 July 2018 • 11:11pm Vid / Pics
Hundreds of Eurotunnel passengers face having to abandon their travel plans as the UK prepares for Furnace Friday.

The Cross-Channel rail operator said it had taken the "unprecedented decision to cancel daytrip/overnight tickets" for travel tomorrow after the extreme temperatures buckled air conditioning units on the trains.

Several carriages had to be taken out of service on Thursday due to the suffocating heat, causing five-and-a-half hour queues, and forecasters have warned that Friday could be even hotter.

It came as the MCC broke its strict dress code and said it would allow members to enter the pavilion at Lords Cricket Ground without a jacket for the first time in its history.

The announcement was made as England became became the hottest country in Europe as temperatures soared to 96F (36C) leading to widespread cancellations of summer outdoor events.

A spokesman for Lords said: “To our knowledge this is the first time members have been given prior permission not to bring a jacket at all.
“Before, once or twice a season, they would be given permission to move around the pavilion without a jacket if it got really hot. It is the first time it has been prior agreed that they don't even need to bring a jacket with them.”

The ongoing heatwave, which could break all time records on Friday if conditions pass 101F (38.5C), has already led to fun runs, charity walks, dog shows, gigs and fairs being called off over fears that participants would overheat.

And as large numbers of stargazers were expected to gather tonight to the lunar eclipse, which could see the Moon turn a deep burgundy red from around 9pm, firefighters called for a ban on barbecues in parks in case sparks set light to parched grass.

Highways England also urged motorists to avoid throwing litter from cars to prevent glass starting fires on motorway verges.
Many dog shows were called off after The Dogs Trust warned animals would suffer if they exerted themselves in the heat, while councils cancelled sports days and the National Trust abandoned some outdoor events.

Gymkhanas and summer horse shows all over Britain were called off because the ground is too hard leading to fears riders could break bones if they fell from the saddle.

Hospitals were forced to cancel non-urgent operations as A&E departments were flooded with people complaining of respiratory problems and dehydration. Nurses reported feeling exhausted, sick and dizzy as temperatures soared inside hospitals
Saffron Cordery of NHS Providers said: “Some trusts are reporting record numbers of people coming in to A & E. This extra activity is leading to delays for patients requiring planned operations such as knee and hip replacements.
“The extreme heat has also highlighted the shortcomings of ageing buildings which are not designed or equipped to deal with these conditions.”

Mudslide strikes as Jackie Chan, production crew film on location in China

Actor Jackie Chan announced on his personal blog Monday that a "massive" mudslide impacted filming for his latest movie, "Project X" while film crews were shooting on location in China.

Chan did not divulge the location of where the mudslide occurred, but parts of southern China, especially Yunnan Province, have seen heavy rainfall since last week, according to AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Eric Leister.

According to Chan, the weather changed suddenly and the crew became caught in the mudslide. Photos on his blog show trucks being slammed by a fast-flowing river of mud and tents with filming equipment also being caught in the mudflow.

The famed actor said many crew members were frightened because the mudslide happened so suddenly. He expressed gratitude for the rescue crews who came to their aid and helped tow their production trucks to safety.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to say a heartfelt 'thank you' to all the people who came to help us,” Chan wrote. "And also 'sorry' to all the crew members who were frightened by the mudslide. Our production team will learn from this experience; be more alert to the weather conditions, do our best to protect our crew members and ensure that working conditions are absolutely safe. Thanks to everyone for your hard work!”

There were no reports of injuries.

Eight people were taken from the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo to the hospital with injuries sustained from hail, according to the Colorado Spring Fire Department.

Reports say that medical personnel set up a triage at the entrance to the zoo due to the amount of people injured from the hail.

A severe thunderstorm tracked over Colorado Springs, Colorado, on Monday afternoon, dropping hail across the city that covered roads and lawns.

Some of the largest hail fell on the southern side of Colorado Springs with hailstones measuring nearly as large as softballs. The massive hail resulted in property damage, including damage to buildings and vehicles.

Highway 24 near Manitou Springs was closed due to debris and flooding in the roadway. A flash flood warning was also issued for southern Colorado Springs and El Paso County.

Man dies in tornado near Alonsa, Manitoba, RCMP says
Aug 04, 2018 9:02 AM

ALONSA, Man. -- A man has died after a tornado touched down west of Lake Manitoba on Friday night and tore at least one home off its foundation, officials said Saturday.

An RCMP spokesman said the 77-year-old man was found dead outside what remained of his wrecked home in Alonsa, Man., about 165 kilometres northwest of Winnipeg.

“The tornado was down for quite some time so we're hearing reports of lots of trailers, and damage to vehicles, trees and homes,” said Sgt. Paul Manaigre, adding that no other injuries were reported.

“There's a lot of damage being reported, and that's only the tip of the iceburg,” said Environment Canada meteorologist Jean-Philippe Begin.

The reeve of the Rural Municipality of Alonsa said the victim was a retired farmer and schoolteacher.

The man lived alone, Stan Asham said, but frequently entertained guests on weekends.

“He was a personal family friend for years of my whole family,” he said. “Fifty-one years ago, July 29, he stood up for me in my wedding party.

Some people reported seeing tennis ball-sized hail in the storm that claimed the man's life, while others said strong winds wreaked havoc.

Annie Richard, 47, captured video of the tornado from her home about two kilometres from where the twister started.
“You hear some people say that it sounds like a freight train,” she said on Saturday morning. “It was just a constant rumble, and it just didn't stop.”

She and her husband watched the tornado grow and move for about a half hour, filming on her phone, Richard said.
Valerie McInnes fled a beachfront campground with her family on Friday night after they saw a funnel cloud form to the southwest.
After seeing a funnel cloud forming to the southwest, she and her family jumped in their car to flee, she said.

“We drove a little ways away to get out of the path and then went back when it was safe,” said McInnes, noting that their property was intact.

“We're very lucky, others lost everything,” she said. “We know of three homes that were destroyed in that area.”

“I have a whole new respect for the weather after tonight,” she wrote.

Environment Canada has sent a storm damage team from Winnipeg to the area, which will track the tornado's path and estimate its strength.

The agency had issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the area on Friday morning, and upgraded it to a severe thunderstorm warning shortly before 8 p.m. About 20 minutes later, a tornado warning was issued.

Asham said he never received a warning on his phone. He said there were warnings on TV but wireless service in the area has been spotty or non-existent since the end of May, which he said remains unfixed by service providers, in spite of promises.

“We count on cell service for our emergency services, so this thing is pretty devastating right in the middle of no phone service,” Asham said.

“The only reason now I'm talking to you on my cell now is I'm on a good spot and I'm south of the bad area.”
