DUESSELDORF, Oct 14 (Reuters) - Deutsche Telekom (DTEGn.DE: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) said on Tuesday it would soon appoint an extra management board member to coordinate data protection issues.
Deutsche Telekom's supervisory board approved the extra seat on Tuesday, which will combine responsibilities for data protection and data security, it said, adding that the appointment would follow soon.
A source close to the company said Telekom's chief in-house lawyer Manfred Balz had been put forward for the job.
"By installing a new management division we ensure among other things that the necessary measures for data protection will be coordinated at the highest management level and implemented throughout the company," Chief Executive Rene Obermann said in a statement.
Deutsche Telekom has launched an investigation into security lapses that have led to three reported incidents this year
At the weekend Deutsche Telekom said a technical error had made it possible to use stolen passwords to access data on 30 million mobile phone customers, adding this security hole had been closed on Thursday.
Deutsche Telekom had already vowed to improve security after it became public this month that thieves hijacked sensitive data on millions of Deutsche Telekom mobile phone customers in 2006. (Reporting by Nikola Rotscheroth; Writing Eva Kuehnen; Editing by Greg Mahlich)
