Diet & Me

Update:

Since I opened this thread I’ve been working on my diet. A while back I quit eating all grains. After reading “Gut Sense” I’ve been reluctant to eat much fiber.

I’ve also read “Life Without Bread” and “The Vegetarian Myth” so I committed to a low carb diet about two weeks ago. Thing is, I was having difficulty eating enough of the recommended carbs, which for me entails maintaining 100 grams daily for the first three months as a transition to the ideal 70 grams. I’m not craving them and the meals of meat and fat are so satisfying that only a little carbs if any can be eaten without stuffing me to discomfort.

Looking at the past two years and seven months since going gluten free, I see that this time has actually been transitioning to lower and lower carbohydrate consumption. So I’m going to just eat 70 grams, and if it’s less, I’ll not be too concerned.

I ‘m feeling better. My energy seems a little higher and definitely more stable. When I get out of bed in the morning I feel healthier, less stressed and clearer in my head. I’m gradually losing some of my unnecessary weight, and my Psoriasis is nearly gone – there’s just an inch-diameter area with a very thin plaque that no longer itches.

Right now I’m detoxing my liver and preparing to detox heavy metals.

I know it's been long since this topic started, but I have to ask you if you are certain that gluten, grains, dairy are the cause of psoriasis?
Because i've been on paleo diet for at least a year now (and also using extra virgin coconut oil), and my psoriasis has always been steady, just on my elbows, but last month it has started to spread...and i have no idea why
Each day it gets worse, and i guess i don't need to mention that am freaking now and feeling desperate and clueless..
Please someone help :(

It is not that it is the cause, but it certainly makes any autoimmune disease worse.

Can you give us an example of what you normally eat during a day?

One thing that helps in psoriasis is to have enough of fish oil. It is like having an overhaul of the body's fatty composition which some actually suggest might take two years. You have to avoid vegetable oils and hydrogenated oils like the plague.

It might be the case that you are sensitive to coconut oil? Perhaps using a different one is worth testing. How about just some olive oil to see how it goes.

Uf..I have no idea how to translate that food in english :-[
But i stick to all kinds of meat ( and i don't mean hot dogs or such), fish, fish soups, veal or chicken soup, some vegetables (asparagus, cabbage...). I am using olive oil that is processed in old natural way and i can say that it is definetly one of the best olive oils in Europe (i said ''one of'')

I don't believe am sensitive to coconut oil so suddenly, because i am using it for 2 years and it helped with my colitis.

I am thinking maybe it's my mental state that it is causing it...I have been nervous lately due to deadlines and exams, but i was nervous before and nothing hapenned, so why now

Have you checked your iron panel? If you don't have iron overload, you could add some vitamin C for adrenal support. I would also add some extra Omega 3s as supplementation despite your fish intake.

In the mean time, remember to breath :flowers:. Some outbreaks will not necessarily be tied specifically to food, but stress is really infamous to make skin problems worse. Don't get discouraged, keep the dietary efforts. And do avoid hydrogenated fats like the plague, even if it means that you have to prepare everything you eat.

If I remember correctly Nora Gedgaudas mentioned in her book: Primal Body, Primal Mind, olive oil is good for you if you are not using it for cooking.
For salads are perfect, but when it's heated up changes the molecules.
" Moderate amounts of extra virgin oil in salads and a dash or two of sesame oil, which contains a potent heat-protective antioxidant, sesamin,
for flavoring in medium-heat cooking are fine.Excessive amount of olive oil, however, along with other vegetable oils, been shown to interfere with the use of omega-3 fats in the diet
and have also been shown to potentially enhance insulin resistance(Enig 2001).
In contrast, omega-3 fats (in form of EPA and DHA) abundant in wild-caught fish, wild game, and exclusively pasture-fed meats- are known to significantly improve insulin sensitivity.
Saturated fats like coconut oil, palm oil, butter, lard, tallow, are essentially neutral and benign in moderate quantities, some having numerous beneficial antimicrobial properties.
They also important for the proper use of both essential fats(omega-3 and omega-6 fats) and protein in the body. "
Hi aelyrsenn,

I'm convinced that it's not just the eating of gluten that causes psoriasis. Gluten compromises the intestinal walls allowing toxins to leak out ultimately damaging the skin. Though my psoriasis receded much by just going gluten free, it didn't disappear until I healed my gut by diligently drinking distilled water mixed with L-Glutamine followed by two capsules of grass fed bovine colostrum morning and evening on an empty stomach.

It's been two years now and the psoriasis hasn't returned.

I would agree with this - top priority with skin conditions should be healing a leaky gut. That means removing anything from the diet that may be aggravating the gut (grains, dairy, coffee, excessive insoluble fibre, ANY processed foods; and nightshades and possibly eggs should be eliminated at least for a couple of weeks to see if they cause issues). Supplementing l-glutamine, as Jerry said, is very helpful, as is supplementing probiotics (fermented foods help too). Supporting digestions is also critical since undigested food is an antagonist to a healthy gut. Supplementing with digestive enzymes and betaine HCL is highly recommended. Bringing inflammation down with fish oil, as Psyche mentioned, as well as turmeric and boswellia is also a good idea.

Chris Kresser has written and spoken a lot about the gut-skin axis. Here's one of his articles and a podcast on the subject. Really good info!

Good luck aelyrsenn!

I have no idea what is bovine colostrum and where to get it, but i can find L-glutamine in capsules...but it is expensive...So, are you using this method still or till your psoriasis cleared?

My family has been drinking and cooking with distilled water for over 5 years now, and many forumites do so also. Since tap water and most bottled water aren’t healthy, you’re guaranteed to be free from various toxins such as fluoride, chlorine and bacteria. The warning that it may flush out minerals I believe is misleading because it would only dissolve mineral salts, and our bodies utilize organic ones.

One can always add 20 or so drops of ionized trace minerals per gallon if there’s any concern.

For colostrum, I recommend this brand, which is available to me at The Vitamin Shoppe and many health food stores.
