Doing the dishes is beneficial for the stress

There are several interesting issues in this.

First, I believe that if a person does not have a certain degree of inclination to serve others, washing dishes will not relax him in any case.

Thus, by doing so you are helping another and also you keep your mind occupied on one level (washing the dishes and doing it well) and on another level the mind can relax, wander, meditate.

The effective action of serving another is always positive for many.

Washing dishes can also be STS because it makes us feel good. If a person lives alone then it any cleaning will simply be for maintenance. I think it’s most likely a neutral action unless you are intentionally washing them so someone else doesn’t have to because they’re too tired or busy or whatever.

All of here probably wouldn’t benefit from the STO aspect because we enjoy it too much and anticipate an outcome of feel good cleanliness

Maybe you're right.

I've never washed a plate, a piece of cutlery and a glass just for myself, so I can't really give an opinion.:-D

Pro and contra doing dishes

I “hate” the thought of doing or having to do the dishes. But love having done them !

And yeah, it baffled me many times that 1) how quickly it goes once you are at it.

And 2) that it has indeed a tranquil, meditative quality ! As if that when the body is busy with lighter mechanical/physical exercises - the mind becomes far more free to travel, easier to sense and gauge things within, as well to reflect (with common sense).

Right now it is my husband who does the dishes - as soon he wakes up. He loves order (being a Capricorn) and likes things to be tidy (without being over the top). While he can be pretty ignorant about other things… that should be in order *LOL*

I am more inclined to do laundry because i still enjoy the luxury of having a laundry machine installed in our home (i never had one in my life, until 11 years ago - and it is still the same one).

Here in Sweden it is common with having laundry rooms for many in the house. But were we live today, the booking system is… uhm… strict. If you miss your time slot’s end by one second - your clothes are locked out - no mercy. Plus it is difficult to even get free time slots. Therefore, having a machine at home, literally feels like a joy and luxury to me.

However, when i develop photo films in the kitchen - all dishes simply must be done, and the kitchen sink needs to be spotless. That gives me a very strong motivation to do the dishes.

Other times i do them, because i am off from work and have a lot of “spill time” - becoming a pleasant chore without being a chore.

Another thing: i LOVE doing dishes when my husband keeps me company in the kitchen while chatting/discussing. It feels like the dishes are done “by themselves” in just 5 minutes
