Earthquakes around the world

The numbers for this week: 2 out of 79 earthquakes worldwide greater or equal to 4.5 and 1518 out of 2180 worldwide of all sizes in the map area. That amounts to 69.6%.
The last week has seen an uptick in bigger earthquakes worldwide, also in the usual North American region. This week 14 out of 100 earthquakes equal or greater than 4.5 fell in the map region and 1564 out of 2087 of earthquakes of all sizes. This amounts to 74.9%.

There's been a swarm of earthquakes (1-29 of January, 1317 earthquakes above 3 magnitude, according Servicio Sismologico Nacional) at the State of Michoacan (Mexico). Is notorious because there had been in the area of the newly 1943 year volcano, El Paricutin.

Given the large number of earthquakes, researchers have already mobilized and there are various hypotheses about what is happening in Michoacán.

A group of researchers from the Universidad Michoacana de San Nicolás de Hidalgo (UMSNH) ruled out risks due to the constant telluric movements.

They assured that it is very unlikely that these movements will predict an explosion of the volcano or the birth of another one, and said that "the most likely is that the current seismic swarm is related to the movement and re-arrangement of the regional faults... there is no reason for alarm," said Martha Gabriela Gómez, a researcher at Inicit.

They also said that it is not known how much longer the seismic swarms in the area will last - it could be hours, days, months or even years.

Meanwhile, Dr. Patricia Alarcón, specialist and coordinator of the Simian Test Laboratory at the University of Michoacan's (UMSNH) Civil Engineering School, dismissed the state's Civil Protection hypothesis that the small earthquakes are resetting the subsoil due to water extraction in agricultural areas.

The expert explained that the zone where the magmatic movement is registered is surrounded by monogenetic volcanoes, the energy would not have a way to reach the surface, which would be causing the movements.

She pointed out that the magma channels found at a depth of 40 kilometers are still active.

While Guillermo Martínez Ruiz, doctor from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia in Barcelona, Spain, has pointed out that what is being experienced at this time in Michoacán had not occurred, he said that it has been a greater seismic swarm than previous ones.

They agree that more research needs to be done

Although the hypotheses of what is generating the constant seismic movement are diverse, the researchers agree that to affirm or to discard any outbreak of a new volcano or the reason of the seismic activity, more studies must be made.

The topic is already on the agenda of the specialists, and even of the National Seismologist who yesterday issued a special communiqué to report the tremors in the region.

The telluric movements have also attracted the attention of the Smartnav platform, which is in charge of integrating electronic and aeronautical systems for monitoring and surveillance.

Smartnav shared on its social networks that it already monitors the Purepecha plateau area, following the constant earthquakes in the vicinity of Paricutin Volcano, where it is performing an aerial thermal analysis of the volcano.

The last week saw the first earthquake of the year above 7.0, which was the 7.7 in Jamaica as has already been reported. Regarding the usual map area of America then 4 out of 111 earthquakes equal or greater than 4.5 fell in the map area and 1503 of 2403 total worldwide. This amounts to 62.6%.

Edit: Added:

According to Japan's Meteorological Agency, the epicentre of the quake was located at a depth of 160 kilometres to the south of Iturup island.
A 7.0-magnitude earthquake hit north-eastern Japan, affecting the islands of Hokkaido and the northern part of the Honshu island, the country's meteorological agency said.
It added that the epicentre of the quake was located at a depth of 160 kilometres. No tsunami alert has been issued.
No damage has so far been reported.
The quake was felt even in Tokyo. According to Japan's seven-grade scale of earthquake intensity, the Hokkaido island was hit by a 4-magnitude quake, while on Tokyo it was measured only at one.

I think those are the disputed islands between Japan and Russia. They belong to Russia, but Japan would like them back and thus might have added that the earthquake was in Japan, when it was Russia as noted by USGS.
