La Palma volcano update: Eruption continues with lava flows and ash emissions, earthquakes picking up again​


After a decrease yesterday, earthquakes under the central part of Cumbre Vieja volcano at 10-15 km depth have again picked up, and included the strongest-so-far quake at magnitude 3.9, which occurred 9 hours ago.
In total, IGN registered 32 quakes of magnitudes 3.0-3.9 and 54 quakes of magnitudes 2.0-2.9 during the past 24 hours.

The Japan Meteorological Agency warns that more earthquakes of a similar intensity are possible over the next week or so, following the strong tremor that hit Tokyo and nearby areas on Thursday night.

The Japan Meteorological Agency warns that more earthquakes of a similar intensity are possible over the next week or so, following the strong tremor that hit Tokyo and nearby areas on Thursday night.

Agency officials say the magnitude 5.9 quake occurred at 10:41 p.m., Japan Time. The quake's focus was in northwestern Chiba Prefecture, neighboring Tokyo, at a depth of 75 kilometers. The quake did not trigger a tsunami.

The quake registered an intensity of five plus on Japan's seismic scale of zero to seven in Tokyo's Adachi Ward, as well as Kawaguchi City and Miyashiro Town, both in Saitama Prefecture.

The officials say an intensity of five plus was recorded in Tokyo's 23 wards and Saitama for the first time since a magnitude 9 earthquake struck northeastern Japan in March 2011.

They say Thursday's quake caused long-period ground motion that swayed high-rise buildings in Tokyo and Chiba Prefecture.

The agency says that shortly after 5:00 a.m. on Friday, Japan Time, a magnitude 3.6 earthquake occurred in the area close to the focus of Thursday's quake.

La Palma volcano eruption update: activity stays elevated, second lava arm at coast, airport closed and earthquakes increase.​


Seismic activity beneath the island has increased in the last 24 hours, both in the number of earthquakes and in their magnitude: The National Geographic Institute (IGN) recorded 1 quake of magnitude 4.3, 30 quakes between 3.0 and 3.8, and 52 quakes between 2.0 and 2.9. The locations of the quakes remains more or less the same, mostly at 10-15 km depth beneath the center of the volcano, and there is no indication that magma is migrating or trying to open new vents.
