Water Pumps At Fukushima's Nuke Plant Halted; Bullet Train Derails After Powerful Japan Quake

Update (1231ET): Japan's Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA) reports water pumps at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant's spent pool have been halted after a powerful earthquake.

NRA said pumps went offline for spent pools at reactor number one and three. Pumps for reactor number three were restarted at 12:22 am local time. The regulator said there's "enough time" to restart pumps at reactor number one. It also said fire alarms were triggered at the plant's number five turbine though details are scant.

Kyodo News reports radiation levels at the plant are normal. This is the same nuclear power plant that went into a meltdown eleven years ago after a powerful earthquake. The plant has since been halted.

Kyodo News says there were a hundred passengers on the bullet train at the time of the derailment. No further details are available.

Bloomberg reports no one is injured among the 96 passengers or the crew.

What, s going on in the the sky? From 26th second till the end of video?
Bright flashes in the sky are known as "earthquake lights" (EQL). the phenomenon is due to the release of energy before, during and after the earthquake and they appear on the areas where there is tectonic stress, seismic activity or volcanic eruptions.

They are flashes associated with tremor due to the friction of the particles present in the earth's crust that generate both electrical and electromagnetic effects.

These flashes are most visible in earthquakes that occur at night. For example, after the 7.1 magnitude earthquake that shook Mexico City in 2021, social network users shared photos and videos like these:

Analyzing 65 earthquake light incidents for patterns in the 2014 study, Freund and colleagues theorized that the lights are caused by electric charges activated in certain types of rocks during seismic activity, "as if you switched on a battery in the Earth's crust."

Campi Flegrei (Solfatara Crater)
Pozzuoli - Napoli - Italy
16 March 2022

An unusual 3.5 earthquake occured in the center of the Solfatara Volcano inside the Campi Flegrei area, in Pozzuoli, west of the city Napoli. Usally you get micro earthquakes there, while the strength of 3.5 belongs to the more unusual events. In the map over Pozzuoli and Solfatara, I added some private remarks, and attached photos from the places so you get a feeling.

- Earthquake Md 3.5 shakes Solfatara
- Echoes of the Japan earthquake can be seen on the seismogram
- Earthquake in the wake of a swarm quake

The INGV recorded a magnitude 3.5 earthquake this afternoon, which occurred in the heart of the Campi Flegrei. The epicentre was in the middle of the Solfatara crater. The depth of the hypocentre was determined to be 2.7 km. Thus, it was an earth tremor that was most likely related to the hydrothermal system of the caldera. Further analyses will show whether it was purely tectonic in nature or whether it was triggered by rock fracturing due to fluid movement.

Echoes of the Japan earthquake on the seismogram of the Campi Flegrei

seismogramm-solf.jpg

For the Campi Flegrei, the moderate earthquake was already quite strong and would very likely enjoy more media attention if it were not overshadowed by the very strong earthquake in Japan. Apropos: the P waves of the Japan quake reached Europe relatively quickly and are also reflected in the seismograms of the volcanoes. Thus, there are seismograms of the Campi Flegrei in which the echoes of the Japan quake manifest themselves as elongated signals.

M 3.5 quake in the course of a swarm quake

On the seismogram, several small sugars can still be recognised; they are weak tremors that predominantly had magnitudes in the range of microseismicity. In addition to the Md 3.5 earthquake, another 39 earth tremors were recorded, so that one can already speak of a quite respectable swarm earthquake. The Md 3.5 earthquake only occurred at the end of the sequence and was not the trigger of the swarm.

The volcanologists of the INGV assume that the quakes are not signs of an imminent volcanic eruption. However, they admit that fresh melt will continue to accumulate in the magma reservoir, which is located at a depth of 8 km. From it, volcanic gases rise, penetrating the crystalline top layer of the magma body and causing unrest in the hydrothermal system.

The current quakes are not yet listed in the weekly report. There were 83 weak quakes reported in last week's bulletin. Ground uplift remained at 13 mm for the month.

Update Earthquake 5.2 in Algeria

A Civil Protection statement noted that their teams registered "some cracks in the buildings" and intervened "to transfer two students who were slightly injured" in a university residence building in the city with views of the Mediterranean.

In the rush to shelter from the earthquake, many people were injured by trampling their feet or falling down the stairs, it was reported at the Bejaia University Hospital, which, one hour after the earthquake, recorded eight injuries.
