'We had never observed them before': First slow quake detected under the sea off the coast of Guerrero (Mexico)-Spanish

The slow earthquake under the sea, detected off the coast of Guerrero, may be related to the September 2021 earthquake.
After 13 days at sea and traveling some four thousand five hundred kilometers, the ship El Puma, which transported scientists from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and Kyoto University, concluded its mission off the coast of Guerrero, where the first slow earthquake was detected under the sea, a phenomenon that had not been recorded in the history of Mexico.
After making landfall in Mazatlan, Sinaloa, scientists hope to confirm the data collected from the ocean floor that indicate that a slow earthquake is occurring under the sea.

The head of the Mexican team, Dr. Victor Manuel Cruz Atienza, from UNAM, explained that the slow earthquake that seems to be occurring could provoke, if an earthquake similar to that of last September occurs in the next few weeks, an earthquake of greater magnitude.
Seismic activity in the Costa Chica of Guerrero, reported by the National Seismological Service, is currently "anomalously high", says Cruz Atienza. He added that the level of seismic activity may be related to the slow earthquakes that have occurred from September to the present.

According to the researcher, this whole seismic panorama has similarities with the events prior to the magnitude 9 earthquake in Japan in 2011, which together with a large tsunami left 15,000 people dead, "which does not mean that the same thing will happen," Cruz Atienza clarified.

The high number of earthquakes produced off the coast of Guerrero in the last five years serves to relieve the energy accumulated by the coupling of the Cocos and North American continental plates.
Ship El Puma fulfills its mission off the coast of Guerrero
Another objective of El Puma's mission was to collect seven seismographs installed on the seabed of the Guerrero Gap to study seismic activity in the area.
The Mexican-Japanese project with a $6 million budget and 6 years of work interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, will continue with the study of all the data collected by the expedition.

The mission managed to salvage three of the seven seismometers installed on the seafloor in 2019 and has been able to place another eight seismometers to provide data in the coming months.

Although frustrated that four seismometers were not collected, the expedition is pleased with the valuable seafloor pressure data collected that will allow them to observe the vertical deformation of the continent and the acoustic GPS data obtained by wave glider.
"We had never directly observed slow earthquakes under the sea in Mexico," said Dr. Victor Manuel Cruz Atienza.

"These silent slips between the plates, collected by the scientific expedition, are the ones before and after the earthquake in Acapulco in September 2021″, he added.
Also, for the first time in Mexico, the deformation of the ocean floor caused by an earthquake has been recorded, added the UNAM doctor.

Yosihiro Ito, chief scientist of the Japanese part of the project, was also satisfied with what has been achieved.

"I need to compare the data collected at sea with those from land, but the most important thing is that with the pressure data from 2017 to 2022, we will be able to know where the major friction zone is where the big earthquake could happen," he explained.
