The National Emergency Office of the Ministry of the Interior and Public Security (Onemi), of Chile, explained that the magnitude 6.8 earthquake was perceptible with different levels of intensity in the regions of Arica and Parinacota, Tarapacá, Antofagasta, and Atacama; north of the South American country, and in the border portion with Argentina.
No damage to people, infrastructure or basic services was reported, but possible effects of various kinds continue to be evaluated.
The Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service of the Chilean Navy (SHOA) reported that "the characteristics of the earthquake do not meet the necessary conditions to generate a tsunami on the coast of Chile."
