Two earthquakes hit Jordan's Aqaba
May 16, 2016 - 9:15:20 am

Amman: An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale jolted at dawn Monday the southern Jordanian city of Aqaba.

After about half an hour, another earthquake measured 2.5 degrees hit the west of the city.

The first earthquake located at a depth of 13 km south of Aqaba on the Red Sea and was felt by the residents, Jordan news agency (Petra) quoted Head of Jordan Seismological Observatory Dr. Mahmoud Qaryouti as saying.

The second earthquake occurred at a depth of 18 km near the city's north-western borders with Palestine.

In April, two earthquakes measuring 3.9 and 3.1 on the Richter scale hit the Dead Sea.

The Japanese meteorological society confirmed the reports of a 5.6 strong earthquake. It said the epicenter of the shocks was in the prefecture of Ibaraki.

This comes exactly a month after a devastating quake hit the Japanese city of Kumamoto on the island of Kyushu, with 200 aftershocks rocking the country following the initial tremor of 6.5 magnitude. Forty-nine people lost their lives in the tragedy, with some 110,000 people being evacuated from areas close to the epicenter.

Ecuador has been hit by two earthquakes within 24 hours, with the latest 6.8-magnitute reported northwest of country’s capital, Quito.

Hours earlier, a 6.7-magnitude earthquake struck the country, which has recently been hit by a series of devastating quakes that have killed dozens of people.

The first quake took place 34km from the town of Rosa Zarate and 35km from the town of Muisne, which already suffered from previous tremors.

According to the USGS, the quake was at a depth of 32km.

More than 600 people were killed and over 2,500 injured in a 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck off the Ecuadorian coast in April. That quake was followed by a series of strong aftershocks. The disaster ravaged coastal towns and left thousands of households without power.
