Earthquakes around the world

Back to the recent M7.1 Ridgecrest earthquake, the Grand Solar minimum YouTube channel released this video which includes satellite images before and after the quake and the movement of the ground is astonishing. Basically a huge parts of the fault line just revealed itself. Some parts of the ground moved 13 feet during the quake. The photos give you an idea how terrifying force this is. The quake part of the video starts at 1:40.

“What is that?” asked Dr. Walter, pointing to the seismograms displayed on a flat screen TV hanging on the wall of the OGS seismic lab. There were a series of red marks that indicate automatic picks by the computer as potential earthquakes. However, these marks were spaced very regularly, so regularly that at first glance they looked like some sort of mechanical noise. The problem with that assumption was that they were showing up on stations all across the state, all at the same time. Anything that widespread is usually associated with a correspondingly large scale event, like an earthquake. This pattern we were seeing looked nothing like an earthquake, or even a series of earthquakes. Other potential causes we guessed at were military aircraft, meteor shower, or something related to gas pipelines. We dubbed this acoustic pattern ‘The Anomaly.’
2019_7_131.gif

This .gif is a map showing the locations of stations in the sequence they detected the anomaly. Note that this does not portray the actual arrival time duration (which would be spanning over nine minutes and be at irregular intervals).

Curious about what we were seeing, and what our sensors were hearing, we attempted to locate a potential source for individual pulses from the pattern. This produced nothing but garbage location potentials with errors so high it was useless. We also attempted locating a source using the first arrival time of the pattern at various stations where it was clearly discernible. This yielded a more interesting result. It still failed to yield a location, however, by plotting out the first arrival times on a map, the anomaly arrived in a ‘ping pong’ like pattern back and forth across the state, mainly in a swath from Tulsa, across OKC and toward Lawton.

We contacted the Oklahoma Corporation Commission about the anomaly, and inquired if they had received any reports of strange noises. Yes, in fact, they had received reports, and had even sent personnel to investigate some of the reports. However, they are as much in the dark as to a potential cause as we are. Contacting Tinker AFB, Vance AFB, and Altus AFB also didn’t lead to any answers.

The precision of timing in the pattern and regularity of its timing most days suggest that it is associated with some sort of widespread activity in the state that has recently been implemented (since March 15th). Also, over time it is occurring more regularly and more strongly (becoming more widespread). As for an exact cause, however, we’re still just guessing.

Magnitude 6.8 quake strikes off Chile, no damage reported
August 1, 2019 - An earthquake of magnitude 6.8 struck off Chile's coast on Thursday, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said, but local authorities said there was no immediate report of any damage.

The quake, initially reported as a magnitude 6.5, was centered 87 miles (140 km) southwest of the coastal city of Valparaiso in central Chile, the USGS said. The quake was very shallow below the seabed.

No injuries, damage or disruptions to basic services had been reported, Chile’s National Emergency Office said in a statement, adding that government agencies were monitoring the situation.

The navy’s information service also concluded that the earthquake did not pose a tsunami risk, the statement said.

Yesterday, and after the earthquake 6.8, I started doing EE as every thursday, and right in the middle of the "Prayer of the Soul", I began to feel another earthquake this time less intense (5,4).

Indonesian authorities urged coastal-dwellers to head for higher ground on Friday after a tsunami warning with potential for waves up to three meters (10 feet) following a powerful earthquake off the islands of Sumatra and Java.

The Indonesian geophysics agency issued the warning after the quake, which the U.S. Geological Survey initially said had a magnitude of 7 and hit at a depth of 59 km (37 miles), about 227 km (141 miles) from the city of Teluk Betung.

The magnitude was later lowered to 6.8.

The geophysics agency said there was a risk of a tsunami of in southern parts of Pandeglang and Panaitan island in Banten province, and Lampung in Sumatra.

Magnitude 6.0 quake rattles Taiwan, triggers some power cuts
TAIPEI August 7, 2019 - A 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck off Taiwan’s northeastern coast on Thursday, the island’s weather bureau said, shaking buildings and cutting power to around 2,000 buildings.

The shallow quake shook buildings in the capital, Taipei. The quake near the northeastern county of Yilan had a depth of 22 km (13 miles).
There were no immediate reports of significant damage or casualties.

The earthquake triggered limited power cuts and forced the suspension of regional railway service in northern Taiwan. There were also reports of gas and water leaks.

Taiwan, a self-ruled island that China considers its own, lies near the junction of two tectonic plates and is prone to earthquakes.

5.5 magnitude earthquake hits South Island New Zealand. A friend in Dunedin just put up a fb post about it. It was initially measured at 6.3 but has been downgraded for some reason.

A 'strong' 5.5 earthquake has struck in the lower South Island.

GeoNet reports the quake, measured a depth of just 12km, hit 15km north of Milford Sound at 10:35pm.

Nearly 7000 people have reported feeling the quake online.

Initially reported as a 6.3 magnitude, it has since been revised down, although GeoNet said they were assessing the shake and would provide a final magnitude shortly.
