Eczema and febrile seizures

A Disturbance in the Force
Shortly after my daughter experienced a febrile seizure she developed a severe case of eczema. Has anyone else heard of this correlation and if so what can be done to combat the present outbreak of eczema? She is experiencing terrible night itching and we are afraid it may lead to infection.

hi cgray16954,

It is customary to introduce yourself in the Newbies section. Just a few words as to who you are, what's your interest in this forum and how you found it.

It would also help to know more about exactly what happened to your child. It does sound like your situation warranties going to the doctor. But hopefully someone can help you with good advice for what you can do in the meantime.

Hi cgray, welcome to the forum. :)

Sorry to hear about your daughter.

I don't know of any connection between eczema and febrile seizures, but I can say from my experience with eczema and psoriasis that it was connected to and alleviated with diet. Nightshade vegetables, gluten and high frucose corn syrup were the primary triggers for me. Dairy/ casein is also another big trigger for eczema.

The below items are suggestions for areas of research that have been helpful for me, but I'd also suggest getting a professorial to examine your daughter.

Supplementation with Hydrochloric acid may be something you may want to look into. There's a post here that talks about hydrocloric acid and eczema in the Life Without Bread thread. Gluten has also been connected to seizures for those who have epilepsy, and there's lots of information on that you can find from a search. A ketogenic diet has successfully been used for treatment. From what I understand, the cause of febrile illness isn't always known, but may be connected to some kind of virus or infection. If this is correct, her weakened immune system may have brought out an underlying food allergy, but this is speculation on my part. Dr. Sydney Baker wrote a great little book on allergies and detoxification called, Detoxification and Healing that you may want to check out.

I'd also suggest reading the Life without Bread thread, and then the Ketogenic Diet thread. They are both long reads, but packed with essential information.

Some other interesting bits I found was that febrile seizures can be prevented with supplementation with "N-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids" (fish oil) because they "reduce the synthesis of IL-1, the main molecule responsible for fever." The study is here. Fish oil has also been used to =http://www.umm.edu/altmed/articles/eczema--000054.htmhelp with eczema: "Fish oil -- In one study, people taking fish oil equal to 1.8 g of EPA (one of the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil) experienced significant reduction in symptoms of eczema after 12 weeks. Researchers think that may be because fish oil helps reduce leukotriene B4, an inflammatory substance that plays a role in eczema. Talk to your doctor before taking fish oil if you are taking any blood-thinning medications, and before taking a high dose. If you're taking high dose fish oil, make sure you use a brand that removes most of the vitamin A. Too much vitamin A over time can be toxic."

Fats in general are one of the most beneficial foods for our body, but we need to be able to adapt the body to use them properly, and the Ketogenic Diet thread is useful in that regard - it is definatly a process and there's lots of information that is needed to understand in how the body works that is needed before jumping in.

I'd also suggest looking into Ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) for supplimentation. This will help strengthen the immune system and it also acts as a natural antihistamine, which should help with the flare ups. There's a thread on vitamin C here.

For immediate treatment of the infection, getting a quality source of nano-silver (smaller particles than colloidal silver) may help without having to resort to antibiotics, which in the end may negatively impact the immune system. ASAP Silver Solution is a reputable brand.

I'd again suggest to consult with a doctor who has a good background in nutrition and allergies (most don't!). If your daughter did get the febrile illness from infection and is now having severe eczema flare ups, it may be appropriate to worry about infection, so a doctor checkup is probably needed and important.
