emphasis mine.
At first I thought that this was a too nice example of vote rigging in favour of one of the candidates in the elections (most likely in favor of Karzai) But then, why would Reuters pick it up? And why would the US army confirm the accident? To prove that there is no vote rigging going on? That all is going according to the books and every little incident is reported in all honesty?
As told in many newschannels the Taliban 'failed' to disrupt the elections as they had announced. Maybe they never had the intention to do so. The other candidate Abdullah Abdullah used to be the right hand man of Ahmed Shah Masoud, the notorious leader that battled for a long time the Russians and afterwards the Taliban (which were then US allies). Ahmed Shah Masoud was the only one of the many warlords in Afghanistan that was considered by the population as genuine. Masoud was killed (a coincidence?) on the 9 10 2001 by two 'photographers' caring a Belgian passport. It might have been necessary for the US prior to start the war in Afghanistan (and prior to 911) and remove the Taliban to get rid of the only person that could have had enough popular support to unite the country (with a genuine interest in the Afghan people) instead of the puppet Karzai. Is it then beyond imagination that Abdullah Abdullah, the right hand man of Masoud, would be a good choice for the people of Afghanistan and that the Taliban (or what they are called by the US, but could maybe better be compared with the Mujaheddin that fought against the Russians) support him? Could it be that Abdullah Abdullah is actually winning? Despite all the vote rigging. So that now active efforts have to be done to prove that the process was correct?

KABUL, Aug 26 (Reuters) - A U.S. military helicopter carrying ballot boxes packed with votes from last week's Afghan election accidentally dumped some of them somewhere over the rugged mountains of Nuristan, officials said on Wednesday.
Some 50 ballot boxes were being carried in a "sling load" beneath a Chinook helicopter from the provincial capital Paroon when the accident happened, they said.
"During transport, apparently some of the materials came out of the load as it was travelling," U.S. army Lieutenant Tommy Groves told Reuters.
He said 15 of the 25 boxes that fell were recovered. The Independent Election Commission said the votes had already been counted and the totals added to the national tally.
A partial tally based on 10 percent of the votes counted has President Hamid Karzai and rival Abdullah Abdullah running neck-and-neck, suggesting a close race headed for second round.
