Experiencing a crisis

From what you describe it seems that he is over the worst. At least he doesn't seem to have any neurological symptoms that warrant any emergency intervention. So having the scan when it is scheduled is going to be ok, at this stage I don't think it will show much. All in all he seems to have been very lucky.

Fingers crossed! You and your husband are in my thoughts.

It seems to be the case that he doesn't have such symptoms. I just got a call from my mother in law from the ambulance taking them to where he'll have the CT scan. I was beside myself since it's already been an hour and a half later than she said she'd call, and I couldn't get her on the phone, and so of course I was imagining the worst. This has been a day from hell. Really has.

Hi Heather, hope things go ok and that your husband heals from this.

Being on the road in India is really an experience. From personal experience, whilst staying with family, I've had a number of near misses myself.

It's true, India has good doctors and absolutely crazy roads--especially in Goa where inexperienced young motorcyclists and drivers take their vacations. My husband and I have been going there the last four years now and he's very careful, but sometimes things conspire against you. It seems he wasn't wearing his helmet just at that point he said because he had just washed the mold out of it, and was waiting for it to dry. (Mold is another Indian hazard.) However, I've read that a jolt to the head can cause traumatic brain injury even with a helmet, so it's no guarantee.

I remember Castaneda's Don Juan saying that although he believed in a predetermined time of death one needed to be careful since accidents happen (!) I always found that amusing. (And instructive.)

Anyway, the scan was looked at by the doctors in attendance and nothing of concern was immediately evident. Then it was looked at by the specialist and it all seems in order, meaning no internal bleeding.

.. so, my husband is due to return to his mother's house tomorrow morning. He's got a ways to go as far as healing goes, but at least he seems to be out of the woods as far as severe brain injury goes. It's scary, this whole brain injury thing. I certainly know a lot more about it than I did just 24 hours ago. In fact, I recommend everyone here read up a bit, since it's good information to be equipped with.

Very sad about her. It seems as though she really hadn't a chance -- unless maybe if she was rushed to the hospital immediately, and yet she had no symptoms initially.

I haven't slept a wink so I'm nearing crashing I think.

I'll do a follow up here as things progress. He's pretty banged up as well, he hit his face on the van first, then the motorbike fell on his leg, so he got burned too, although he said it wasn't hurting even though it looked pretty charred. I do wish I was there with him, but his mother and others are there, and all are very caring.

Thanks again everyone. It's nice that you all are there since it can be difficult being alone on this mountain sometimes.
