Eyes Wide Shut - Stanley Kubrick

Some of these producers have been 'members of the club' for a long time... helping out here and there, directly and/or indirectly involved, for patriotic, racial or other reasons that entertain them at the time.
As i've said before, I remember hearing about what became known as the Patriot Act years before from some offshore financial guy... I never paid it any attention, but I didn't know he was an ex member of Congress then... same with so many of these producers in Hollywood... and Mel G was right about most of what he said... they control the town, the industry, same in banking and media... which is why he got so what heat saying it, even when drunk.... it's all like some huge farce.

As for Nicole's words on this subject, it's hard to tell as she is usually rather guarded in her conversations... which has always shown up in her acting as well.... it's in her personality, and she rarely gets parts that doesn't allow that to leak out... only comic roles do that... .like her role in Bewitched.... but when she made this Eyes Wide Shut film, she was still young and like most of us, probably didn't know what she was getting involved in, and perhaps the same can be said in part about its director? Shouldn't he have known to frame this subject matter in a different light? Or perhaps it wouldn't have mattered? The W brothers, or sisters now, right? did this and continue to do so in their projects... Matrix being the best.

You can criticize the military, criticize the system, criticize AI, show how war drives people crazy, and Kubrick's talent was to show us how savage, inhuman, and genocidal the Empire is, even in The Shining. But you can't criticize pedophilia; it's forbidden, and those who do it pay with their lives. It's a subject as deep as the ocean.

And yes, the end of the film talks about pedophilia, but most people don't see it. However, Kubrick fans and those who know a little about the subject have seen it. Pedophilia is a diabolical, sectarian subject. Do not touch.

I'd like to see the film again, but what's stopping me is the nauseating presence of Nicole Kidman. I can't stand her. I'm going to read the articles a forum member posted, and then maybe one day I'll read Arthur Schnitzler's short story.

Just to be clear, my haha emoji was in response to “the nauseating presence of Nicole Kidman”.😂
 
If I remember correctly, in the film Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman's characters are talking in a toy shop at the end, and their daughter just wanders away from them looking at teddies. And at this point, a couple of dodgy-looking men follow her out of sight. Even when I saw it in the cinema at the time I thought that was weird, but elite paedo sects weren't on my radar back then.

Also, a bloke on X noted that in the satanic sect, the bloke in the red robe of the ceremony was wearing a mask based on the face of actor Peter Lorre, who played a paedo in Fritz Lang's 1951 film "M". Knowing as I do now that Kubrick loaded his films with subtle visual references, it seems very plausible to me that "EWS" was indeed intended by Kubrick to be a film about more than just sordid sex parties of the rich and famous.

I'm watching "The X-Files" series on binge at the moment, but I have "Eyes Wide Shut" on my hard drive, so I will watch it again to see if I can notice any more subtle visual cues. No doubt, Kubrick was a genius film-maker.
 
Eyes wide shut is a multi-layered movie as it is. There are many themes but I don't think child abuse has been removed or that it had to be more explicit. Besides the daughter that disappears at the end with the two old men, there is the whole part with the costumes shop. Not only the owner's daughter knows what costume to wear at those "parties", but she is explicitly sold by her father. There are internal themes like voyeurism, fantasizing on other people (cheating in your mind) etc. but also "societal" issues (the rich and powerful and what lies behind the sophisticated façade). This is one of them.
 
I stumbled upon a whole series dedicated to analysis of Eyes Wide Shut and watching it now. The author spent around 20 years looking at different aspects of the movie and taking notes, and now he is making videos. 15 of 21 planned episodes are already on YouTube. I found it very interesting and maybe some of you would do it too.

I’m already on episode 5 of this In Plain Sight series. The episodes themselves are basically 8 minutes long, so they go very quickly and in easy bites. And btw, @loreta , Nicole Kidman is almost not heard nor featured in any large quantity, so aside from maybe an antacid tablet or two, you shouldn’t need a barf bag.🤣

I am episode 4. I like these episodes because they remind me of all his movies and I wanted to see them again. Furthermore, I had a friend who was obsessed by Kubrick also. Kubrick was a god for him. I thought he was a little crazy, but now I understand his passion for a genius.

I forgot he did Lolita, with Mason and Shelley Winters, that I adore. Likewise, I liked the movie, a love story and a very ironic vision of the American way. So these episodes are important also because now, when we will see a Kubrick movie, we will see it with more profundity and understanding.

Really cinema is a wonderful school.
