FB nastiness

Access to Facebook is restricted at work. When I read my personal e-mail today one of the messages from Facebook was that some guy named “John Smith” posted to my wall with just the C word in quotes.

I’ll delete it when I get home, but I was wondering how it was done, because I’m sure my FB settings only allow friends to post to my wall.

Does this mean a FB friend of mine changed his name to pull a prank? Or can FB accounts be hacked?
Thing is, why would anyone go through that much just to post a swear word?

Accounts can be hacked, but it looks like he was your friend and then changed his name, after he posted on your wall, then removed himself from your friends list. His account could have been hacked, since the pic is familiar and I think he is a member of this forum. I would not delete it yet, if I were you - it might come in handy at some point.

Thanks, anart

I'll dig around at home if I have time before EE tonight or tomorrow.

Don't like to put much time and effort for stupid stuff like this, but I admit it bugs me a little.

I got a wall post from this guy too.

It said simply "brainwashed mong", which I think was intended to be an insult, so I blocked him and the post was automatically scrubbed. I noticed that he was friends with about 10 other forum members.

Same here. I got "faggort" on my wall. I was going to correct his spelling :P But by the time he wrote it, he was no longer my friend and had already removed photos from his profile and his name had already been changed to John Smith. I imagine he was posting and then removing us immediately afterward.

At the time he posted on my wall, he was still friends with 2 others in our group. I took several snapshots of his profile as it gradually disappeared, in case they prove useful for anything. He changed his gender to female and started removing his interests one by one, along with friends.

Sounds like either a) hacked profile or b) his brain went kablooey.

Does anyone recall his real first or last name? I think I do, but I don't want to jump to conclusions and my memory may not be serving me well.

I had a similar problem with a private message, but I mean this is hilarious it was showed to me like a new message from that user, but actually it was a message sended by my account, a meeting proposal, then I wrote "?" because it was strange, then that "?" seemed like me asking two times. I've been reading from other accounts that some are sending porn messages or using your profile.

Unless it's an official app developed by a well-known company (and not an imposter), we need to stay away from FB apps entirely. Block any requests, don't click on any posts on friends' paged that were posted "via <insert app name" here", especially if that post is something like "You won't believe what this guy did!"

And of course, monthly password changes ;)

I am curious, what is the benefit or need for changing passwords monthly?

None, unless the password is compromised at the time you change it.

If it is compromised, a change - if you are lucky and the change turns out timely - can save your account.

So it is possible that it might help, but not likely. Much more important is preventing that a password is compromised in the first place.

Yeah you're right, it would only help in very particular circumstances. Passive compromises such as eavesdroppers, whether that be nosy ex-partners, family members etc. They will only be able to invade your privacy for as long as you retain the same password. Changing once a month might be excessive. The typical policy at most offices is once every three months. But like you said Psalehesost, it won't stop opportunistic attacks such as fraud or using your account to spam. By the time you change your password, the damage is already done.

I recognize that picture as the forum member melatonin. I do not remember his real name though. He had posted a link to his profile in the facebook thread here: https://cassiopaea.org/forum/index.php/topic,15795.msg245974.html#msg245974 but deleted it a few weeks ago.

Hi there,

Yes, my account was hacked.
Only just come online again after 2 weeks. Had to do full restore and bought some new anti spyware/firewall.
Only found this thread by typing in "... facebook" on google, to see if my profile was still active. (Because i couldnt log on FB).

Certainly NOT the type of person to abuse/disrespect someone online. Some 3D friends also got abusive messages on their wall.

Are we ok deleting this thread now? I dont fancy having my name and photo online like this, like im some kind of WANTED bank robber or something!
