"Our Lady Of The Assassines". (La virgen de los sicarios)

Great Passion, Much Violence and great sadness impregnate this gay movie A Colombian-French coproduction.

It is an intellectual, Fernando, in his fifties who returns to his hometown, Medellin, after 30 years of absence. It makes sentimental friendship with a teenager, Alexis and soon discovers that its young lover is a hitman of the communes popular of Medellín. Fernando is then immersed in an atmosphere of violence and homicide caused by the urban wars of drug trafficking. Alexis is an expert in murder, which contrasts with his religiosity and devotion to Mary Help of Christians, which inspires the title of the work.

DIDACTIC SHEET taken from www.edualter.org/material/cinemad2/virgen.htm

1. PEDAGOGICAL OBJECTIVES

Analyze the relationship between generalized and extreme violence and the expansion of drug trafficking.
Reflect on the link established between marginalized young people and the drug trafficking.
To know a contradictory popular culture that combines absolute disregard for life and a deeply rooted religiosity.

2. KEY WORK FOR TEACHERS

"The virgin of the assassins" is a controversial and sometimes uncomfortable film.

It portrays the process of social and moral decomposition of a city like Medellín. Its population lives in a state of permanent tension with an extreme and generalized level of violence. Young people from slums, hired by drug traffickers as hitmen, kill in a totally dehumanized way, without any hint of moral conflict. Fernando, the protagonist of the film, will gradually become increasingly indifferent as the dead rise around him, as if this were already the only way to survive. Violence has become extreme as the cocaine economy has become more prominent. In this sense, the celebrations with fireworks are significant every time the narcos manage to "crown", that is to say, to introduce a cargo of coca in the United States.

For any that are interested in mountain climbing, which is also set in a period before WWII, the film North Face could be recommended. North Face here refers to Eiger (Bernese Alps, Switzerland).

from wiki - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Face_(film)

North Face (German: Nordwand) is a 2008 German historical fiction film directed by Philipp Stölzl and starring Benno Fürmann, Florian Lukas, Johanna Wokalek, and Ulrich Tukur. Based on the famous 1936 attempt to climb the Eiger north face, the film is about two German climbers involved in a competition to climb the most dangerous rock face in the Alps.[1]

The movie portrays an attempt in 1936 to summit the Eiger via the north face by two competing climbing teams. The more prominently featured pair of German climbers are Toni Kurz (Fürmann) and Andi Hinterstoisser (Lukas) from Berchtesgaden. After being refused leave from the German army (falsely claiming one of them is getting married and the other is to be Best Man), they quit their service in order to make the attempt. They are portrayed as being more interested in mountaineering than in the current politics of the time. The competing team of Austrians that eventually teams up {not exactly "teamed up"} with the German team are portrayed as hoping for a Nazi-led incorporation of Austria into Germany. Watching their summit attempt is their childhood friend Luise (Wokalek), now working for a German newspaper, who is accompanied by her cynical superior Mr. Arau (Tukur).

It offers up a few interesting characters; a greedy newspaper head bent on 'nationalism' and other climbers who put the main characters at risk; the film has some stunning mountain scenes.

It is by definition, a cliff-hanger.

GOING UP BY A MOUNTAIN IN TWO LEVELS OF REALITY.

This movie about climbing made me think the two meanings that this fact could have:

Climbing a mountain in the reality of the third dimension (3D.) Or climbing the mountain in the inner world,in dreams, for example.

For people who have the DREAM OF CLIMBING A MOUNTAIN TO THE TOP is a sign of a great achievement that we will obtain in daily life, but what happens when someone has this dream and this is interpreted as a mandate that has or should be done in Real life of

the 3D? And maybe it does not really need to, because it corresponds to an inner achievement that they are transmitting to him, but if you interpret this as a mandate of something you must do in the reality of daily life, it can become a great challenge that may end up being a great experience that advances the protagonist in several levels of his existence, although perhaps not It was necessary for him to climb that mountain in real life because the advance in the internal development for the dreamer was a fact, a real achievement in his personal life.

It would be interesting if forumitas put interesting / favorite movies from their original country, even if they do not have subtitles. Sometimes images are more powerful than words.

There is a saying: "It rains on wet", when calamities happen one after another in daily life, chaining problems difficult to solve; But the bigger the challenge, the more life is appreciated when you manage to overcome them and get ahead.

The common element in the couples of these movies is that it rains over their love

Maggi aimed to be an actress, but got pregnant during a chance encounter and has now fled to a provincial town to give herself a second chance. The lovers represent everything the straitlaced society rejects. Yet even when people take advantage of them, when the couple are accused of theft, when they are thrown out of their apartment – at least they seem to have a guardian angel, who appears in the unlikely form of the “Man with the Umbrella”.

Cold War (2018 film)Dir. Pawel Pawlikowski (polish)

I have not seen it yet, but the excellent reviews that this film has had is an invitation to see it.
Trailer.

The 50s, a pianist (Tomasz Kot), who is commissioned to form a kind of Operación Triunfo, is to say, in Postwar Poland (actually a large group of men and women who will be trained to promote popular music in the country ), falls in love with one of the candidates (Joana Kulig), an amour fou, of the authentic ones, who will go back and forth, for more than a decade, between the communist bloc and that West where jazz reigns and begins to reign the rock'n'roll.

We speak of a film out of time, since already immortal, that could honor the forms of the cinema of yesteryear, but without falling into pastiche or imitation. Pawlikowski applies the formal conciseness (ellipsis, footage adjusted to just over 80 minutes), black and white photography and even, I think, the format of 'Ida', to tell a totally different story that starts, chronologically a little before, in that same snowy Poland controlled by communism. Soon the chemistry between Kot ('Spoor'), luck of Polish Belmondo, and Joana Kulig (that already sang in 'Ida' and that, at least in a plane, remembers a more carnal version of Gena Rowlands, becomes evident, with something from the Vitti). They are the protagonists of a romance in turbulent times that puts heart, an immense heart, to the masterful invoice of the film. Zero imposture, all emotion.(Summary:Philipp Engel 11-05-2018).

A COMIC MONOLOGUE THAT DOES NOT LOOK FOR LAUGHTER.
Aloma Rodríguez 06 July 2018

The Australian comedian Hannah Gadsby turns the genre of stand up comedy in a monologue in which she announces that she leaves comedy.

A lesbian from Tasmania. Hannah Gadsby is from Australia, from Tasmania, where homosexuality was considered a criminal activity until 1997. Gadsby is a lesbian, but it took at least ten years until she assumed it and used the self-destruction she had accumulated to change it into a self-deprecation used for comedy. He knows how to do it, there is no doubt. The first twenty minutes of his monologue Nanette, which can be seen on Netflix, - he says it's called that because he met a woman who thought he would give her two hours of comedy and not; but the mystery remains this way - they are a display of the more or less familiar resources of the stand up comedy: jokes about herself and her lesbian status, jokes about the genre of comedy itself, jokes about how to confuse her with a man or with A transsexual man, jokes about Tasmania, his family and his coming out of the closet. But something happens then: he says that he can no longer do comedy, precisely because it is based on self-deprecation, and "that for someone who lives on the margins is not humility, it is humiliation".

Picasso and the geniuses. Gadsby studied History of Art. Use humor to point out how throughout history women have been portrayed as objects, but they have hardly had a voice. Take the opportunity to make a point based on jokes to the two options that art history gives women: virgin or whore ("technically, would fit in the virgin"). And he mocks the image of women that occurs in many classic paintings: sleeping naked in the forest; She says that she does not fit into that world because she knows how to dress. He also jokes with ninja turtles to talk about the relationship between art and power. He talks about Vincent van Gogh, his illnesses and his medication, and rejects the idea of ??the cursed genius and that mental illness is something like a price to pay in exchange for great talent. He confesses the antipathy that Picasso produces, which he considers a misogynist and reproaches him for his relationship with Marie Thérèse Walter, when she was seventeen years old. He insists that she was a minor and he was over forty years old. For me it is worse the phrase in which Picasso says that "the two were in their fullness", a phrase to the Gadsby points. Nor do I believe that Bill Cosby, Harvey Weinstein, Donald Trump, Roman Polanski and Woody Allen belong to the same category.

The identity, again. At the beginning of the monologue, when Gadsby is in the part of the jokes, he tells how he receives "feedback" from lesbians and "opinions from men". She says that a lesbian accused her of having "little lesbian content" in her monologues. She also talks about how complicated it was for her to identify with someone in the homophobic Tasmania. But it was not easier for him to identify with the gays he saw parading on television at carnival. It did not fit anywhere. Now she says lesbian is not what she identifies with, but "tired". The background of this monologue goes against the labels, Gadsby defends the difference and coexistence, understanding and listening; and tells how complex it is to find our place in the world - for everyone, but some start with certain disadvantages.

Top the jokes. Gadsby explains that he wants to leave the comedy because it is based on the tension he creates before ending the jokes. She says that the laughter served her all her life to relieve tension and now she is tired of tension. In addition, he says, jokes serve to encapsulate his trauma, not to free himself. On the other hand, says Gadsby, the monologues do not allow to tell the whole story, the end never comes, is buried by the auction. She gives two examples: the joke about her mother's reaction when she told her that she was a lesbian does not tell the whole story, that now they get along very well and that her mother asked her forgiveness for having waited for her to pass; and the joke about the guy who wanted to beat her for talking to his girlfriend thinking she was an uncle. Actually,he did hit her: being a lesbian made her worthy of a beating. In an unpredictable way, Gadsby lets out anger. She tells of an episode of sexual abuse in childhood and that two men raped her at twenty. And this is where I think Hannah Gadsby's speech is powerful: she says she does not want to be a victim, because victimization only leads to revenge and anger and she does not want to spread anger. He says that laughter and anger can be used both to unite people. But she does not want that. All she wants, she says, is to tell his story well, with all the parts.

Great song
Great Song from The Party

The Party is a 1968 American comedy film directed by Blake Edwards, starring Peter Sellers and Claudine Longet. The film has a very loose structure, and essentially serves as a series of setpieces for Sellers's improvisational comedy talents.[2] The comedy is based on a fish out of water premise, in which a bungling Indian actor accidentally gets invited to a lavish Hollywood dinner party and "makes terrible mistakes based upon ignorance of Western ways" set in the 1960s.

The Party is considered a classic comedic cult film.[4][5] Edwards biographers Peter Lehman and William Luhr said, "The Party may very well be one of the most radically experimental films in Hollywood history; in fact it may be the single most radical film since D. W. Griffith's style came to dominate the American cinema." Film historian Saul Austerlitz wrote, "Despite the offensiveness of Sellers's brownface routine, The Party is one of his very best films... Taking a page from Tati, this is neorealist comedy, purposefully lacking a director's guiding eye: look here, look there. The screen is crammed full of activity, and the audience's eyes are left to wander where they may.wiki

Hindu actor Hrundi V. Bakshi (Peter Sellers) has landed a job as an extra in several Hollywood films; but one day his luck changes and he is chosen as the protagonist of the remake of an old movie, with such bad luck that during the break he unintentionally destroys the set and is fired, being banned by the producer to work again in or for Hollywood.

The plot gets complicated when, by mistake, he receives an invitation to a party organized by the same producer of the film (his wife's birthday) and he agrees to go. Once inside you will be involved in various events that involve an invasion of foam, a baby elephant, a drunk waiter, a flying chicken, a group of Russian musicians, a parrot and a host of absurd situations.

I was thinking about "The party" the other day. It is not bad... but better, for me, is "Playtime", by Tati, if we are talking about this genre. Like in "The Party" you don't need to speak nor English nor French.

Thomas Stockmann (Steve McQueen) is a doctor and amateur scientist in a small unnamed Norwegian town. The town is expecting a major boost in tourism due to the therapeutic powers of nearby springs but Stockmann has discovered they are being polluted by waste from the town's tannery. Peter offers to use the springs' revenue to implement the changes his brother wants if Thomas will keep quiet but the doctor remains uncompromising.

Thomas calls a town meeting in order to spread the news but his brother and the newspaper's publishers shout him down and deride him and he is unable to state his case. The townspeople treat the previously respected and popular Stockmann family as pariahs - his daughter is dismissed from school and rocks are thrown through the windows of their house. Thomas' family remain loyal to him, however, and decide against emigrating to America. Instead they decide to stay in the town and wait for Thomas' discovery to be proved in time. As they celebrate their decision, a fresh hail of stones come through the family home's windows.

IN THE PALM OF YOUR HAND.
En la Palma de tu Mano 1951 Espanol Latino

FROM THE REVIEWS OF MOMA (Museum of Modern art) of "NEW YORK FILM FESTIVAL MEXICAN FILME NOIR":

With Arturo de Córdova, Leticia Palma, Ramón Gay. With the slightly frayed good looks of an aging matinee idol, Arturo de Córdova became Mexcan noir’s perfect patsy, helplessly in thrall to his erotic obsessions. The title of Robert Gavaldón’s film cuts two ways: as the fraudulent fortune teller Professor Karin, Córdova uses the secrets of his female clientele to blackmail them, while at the same time he is a pawn in the higher game being played by a treacherous widow (Leticia Palma).

Even more occult, Gavaldón’s “In the Palm of Your Hand” stars de Córdova as a mercenary fortuneteller operating out of a neon storefront. The setup is reminiscent of the 1947 Hollywood movie “Nightmare Alley,” and the suspense is worthy of James M. Cain: At one point, a guilty couple carrying a corpse in their car trunk get a flat tire and must cope with the helpful motorcycle cop who wants to check their spare.

Arturo de Córdova’s blackmailing fortuneteller, whisks a mark to a waterfall to tell Leticia Palma’s murderous widow, “The cascade doesn’t worry nor feel remorse. It goes on, unafraid of punishment.”

Punishment, of course, is the thing to fear most in this Mexico.Punishment and mirrors, that is—in film after film, men and women with reasons to feel guilt can’t stand to see themselves reflected. (Reviews Edited)

Merci Pour Le Chocolat official film trailer (Thank You for the Chocolate)

A young piano student, Jeanne Pollet (Anna Mouglalis), discovers that she could have been changed at birth by the son of the famous piano soloist, André Polonski (Jacques Dutronc). Curious, visit the house of Polonski where it is very well received by the musician and his wife, Marie-Claire 'Mika' Muller (Isabelle Huppert), owner of a famous chocolate factory. Guillaume (Rodolphe Pauly), Polonski's son, is less enthusiastic about the new arrival, especially when his father asks him to return for an extended visit so he can help her in her game.

As Jeanne gets to know the family better, she becomes increasingly aware that things are not as harmonious as they might have seemed at first. In particular, he suspects Mika when he deliberately watches her knock down a bottle of chocolate destined for Guillaume. With the help of a boyfriend who works in a forensic laboratory, he discovers that chocolate was drugged.

The elegant and well-designed 53rd feature film by Claude Chabrol is a tempting brew that, like the cocoa before going to bed served in Polonski's house, is a pleasure to consume but leaves a slightly sick feeling afterwards. Adapted from The Chocolate Cobweb by the American writer Charlotte Armstrong, but transferred to the Mecca of chocolate production, Switzerland (the Swiss are not only one of the largest producers of chocolate in the world, but also hold the highest rate of consumption per capita of sweets in the world world), this is another in the director's long list of suspense novels that examines the tensions that lurk beneath the surface of benign bourgeois families and the ability of seemingly civilized individuals to commit murder.(new wave film.com) Edited

Plot
As she burns at the stake, a 17th century witch, Jennifer (Veronica Lake), places a curse on her accuser (Fredric March), so that from this day forward, all of his descendants (each played by him) will be unhappy in marriage. After several hilarious through-the-years examples (the Civil War-era Fredric March runs off to battle rather than endure his wife's nagging), we are brought up to 1942. Wallace Wooley (March) is a gubernatorial candidate, preparing to wed snooty socialite Estelle Masterson (Susan Hayward) -- the well-to-do daughter of a publisher who is backing him. A bolt of lightning strikes the tree where Jennifer had been executed three centuries earlier, thereby freeing the spirits of Jennifer and her warlock father, Daniel (Cecil Kellaway). Wallace meets Jennifer when she materializes in a burning building, obliging him to save her life. The revivified sorceress does everything in her power to induce Wallace to fall in love with her -- even destroying the ceremony in which the wedding is supposed to take place. The attempts succeed, and the two marry, but on their wedding night, Wallace refuses to believe Jennifer's claims that she is a witch. Frustrated, she attempts to convince him by doctoring the gubernatorial election -- in his favor. Based on the Thorne Smith novel The Passionate Witch, the rollicking I Married a Witch can be considered the forerunner of the TV series Bewitched, but only on a surface level. The film had been scheduled to be directed by Preston Sturges and to be released by its producing studio, Paramount; the end result was helmed by René Clair (his second Hollywood film), and was distributed by United Artists. Well I am surprised !!!! I never expected such a movie and at such a moment in this icon's movie career. Better yet, I never heard this movie mentioned. The timing of the movie is most interesting but perhaps I am reading more into this then I should. However knowing how things went for Mel Gibson nothing surprises me in Hollywood. But who knows. God for sure.

This movie is so far ahead of itself that ... well I have no words to describe it. Sort of like Lennon's message, "Give Peace a Chance", which was apparently not a good message.

This movie was made in 1978 with Steve McQueen being the Executive Producer. That is amazing. What did Steve have on his mind to do this movie ? Looking at his filmography places this movie is in the Left Field but no one does anything without a reason.

"This was a personal project for McQueen, as he made it to prove to many people that he could act. But Warner Bros. could not figure out how to distribute it and decided not to release it domestically. It had a very brief theatrical release in New York a few years after it was made. "

"Steve McQueen wanted his wife Ali MacGraw to star opposite him, until they broke up just before production began."

"This is Steve McQueen's first return to a movie role since his "retirement" after The Towering Inferno, in which he was one of the biggest box office draws, thereafter rejecting offer after offer (including Close Encounters of the Third Kind and William Friedkin's Sorcerer) until this very small, yet important, part came along. "

Ali :-)

Thank You for bringing this up cause I would have left this Plane without knowing about Steve's interesting deviation. That title says a lot !!!!
