I recently watched the latest comedy The Naked Gun 2025 movie starring Liam Neeson (as Frank Drebin Jr.) and was pleasantly surprised. I know humour is a subjective thing, but my family and I found the movie very entertaining and felt it kept the spirit of the originals. I thought it to be a good movie that was well written and well paced and at the end realised I hadn’t enjoyed watching a film at the cinema in this way in years.

The movie features the deadpan humour made iconic by the original lead Leslie Nielson (playing Frank Drebin) in the naked gun tv and film series and the comedy film “Airplane” prior, a spoof of a unpopular movie of the same name. Whereby the majority of the time characters act in a serious manner in contrast to the comedic and ridiculous circumstances in which they find themselves.

The actual movie follows Frank Drebin Jr. leading the special unit ‘Police Squad’ fighting crime and uncovering a sinister plot for world depopulation (good thing no-one would actually this...). Though note the comedy as usual in the series is the main focus.
Trailer for the 2025 The Naked Gun movie. Note personally I don’t like the trailer that much as the comedy doesn’t land the same out of context.

And a brief clip Leslie in the 1998 The Naked Gun Film.
I’m not sure whether anyone can live up to Leslie’s’ work but Liam gives it his best and I think if you enjoy the original movies this film may be worth seeing.

A couple of spoilers for the movie.
There are a couple of tributes to Leslie Nielson and his character Frank Drebin fitting within the comedy of the movie.
Only one part of the movie had me concerned for where it was going. At some point a young female cop attempts to arrest Liam Neeson’s character Frank Drebin Jr. and she starts patronising him for his disregard of the law. This is defiantly justified but it just reminded me of all the destruction of heroic characters across modern media. However, the movie takes a different course, and this is ultimately revealed to just be the setup for another joke as Drebin Jr. gets the upper hand.
My favourite joke was Frank Drebin Jr destroying not only his own phone but other peoples to prevent him being tracked by the police.
