There is a report out of a fireball over Hungary and the report is in Hungarian. Haven't been able to find any English reports yet. Any chance someone here can find an English report or else translate the article at the website below?

I used an online Hungarian to English translator and got semi-coherent results. It basically states that currently it is thought to be a meteorite and is being investigated by Hungarian authorities. Here is the translation if it helps at all:

"Meteorite brewing in the sky?

caption reads: "Sunday night, with a strong fényjelenségekre villanásokra have been francisco Miskolc, Kazincbarcika, Putnok Ózd, and in the vicinity."

The an and special fényjelenség cause likely to have a meteorite could be - has informed the Borsod Online t Egyedné Novodonszki Eve B. A. Z. County Rendőrfőkapitányság sajtószővívője. The villanásokról due protection and interesting that more settlement also received notification on Sunday at the same time, and almost 23.20 minutes the county rendőrfőkapitányságra. The unknown has been informed that the Katasztrófavédelmet, which commenced an investigation on the matter."

Hopefully someone that actually speaks Hungarian can help. ;)

Hi guys,

Indeed, there was a significant amount of sighting of that the phenomenon all-over Hungary.
According to the news, an extremely bright object, like a strange ball of fire flown trough the eastern part of the country.
The phenomenon, lite up the whole sky where it has passed trough and some of the spectators pointed out that even it's tail was visible.
The object considered to be a "Bolide".
There are some officially unconfirmed information regarding it's impact crater, situated in Slovakia:

Some additional information and a video that actually captured the phenomena.

Some of those, who sighted the Bolide mentioned a loud, window-shaking noise too.

The object described as it's head seemed greenish and the tail section yellowish.
Last night was a bright full moon at Hungary, however the object appeared to be significantly brighter than the moon.

A picture shot the object's "trail".

So, Mr. Spock, I will try my best, but i have to tell, I am not a translator :)

Meteor on Borsod's sky?

On Sunday night people noticed flashes, strong light phenomenons around Miskolc, Kazincbarcika, Putnok, and Ózd.

The flashes and the strange light phenomenon might be caused by a meteor - Eva Egyedne Novodovszki spokeswoman of the Borsod-Abauj-Zemplen County Police Department informed the Borsod Online.

There were reports about the phenomenon with flashes and thundering from several settlements, almost the same time on Sunday 23:20 to the county police department. The Catastrophe Protection Agency was informed and it started an investigation on the case.

The surprisingly bright sky flashes were seen in Borsod (county), Budapest (capital) and also in Szabolcs (county) by lots of people Sunday night.

I hope it will help :)

Hi dövan --

Thanks a lot for your contribution. We ask that all new members make an introductory post in the Newbies section -- just mentioning briefly something about themselves and how they found the forum. Looking forward to seeing you there :)

DupleX01,
I read the article in the Kosice news (I understand SLovak), and basically all they said was that people living in and around Kosice witnessed a very bright object on Sunday before midnight and it appeared to have fallen somewhere in the south. An astonomer, Drahomir Chochol, said that the object appeared to be of the size of a soccer ball (he received this information from Czech Republic) and appeared to be of a green color. He also said that there was a very loud noise that sounded like an exlosion; Mr. Chochol rated the power of the explosion as -9. They did not mention anything about a crater.

I will check Markiza news if there is more info coming out of there.

Hi all,

Thanks for the translation help with this story. And if you do happen to come across more information, do post it here. :)

Hi everyone,

I'll try to translate the aktuality.sk article. This event has been mentioned in the Czech press as well, not sure if translating Czech articles would be helpful too.

Hi All!

So, there is some additional information on index.hu (http://index.hu/tudomany/2010/03/02/megsem_meteor_volt_a_titokzatos_izzo_tuzgomb/)

They are describing, that the Wizz Air Madrid-Budapest flight's captain and first officer saw the fireball and reported it to the air control:

"There was a slim cloud layer about us and at the first flash I thought I see only the light reflection of the Moon. Then suddenly broke out from the clouds a glowing orb and it is seemed that it is heading in our direction. In circumstances like this very hard to estimate the distance and direction but it appeared dangerously close to us. First I thought a rocked or space shuttle is in front of us and looked at the radar how we can bypass it." - said the first officer (György Feledi) to the Index.hu"

"We notified immediately the radar in Budapest as more other flights too, including one belongs to the Cathay Pacific. Later it came out that we were approximately 300 kilometers from it, but it is sure that it reached our altitude and falling below than 30.000 feet or 10.000 meters." - Feledi denied the allegations, that the object what appeared to be a meteor destroyed at the height of 70-80 kilometers.

Later the article describes that most probably the object hit the ground as there was a huge explosion to the north from Aggtelek, most probably on Slovakian territory. The local deputy head of the catastrophe protection agency said that it might have been an UFO as the light was white.

The impact point might have been around village "Beretke/Bretka" or town or "Rozsnyó/Roznava", the Slovakian authorities are looking for the crater.

Here's the translation of this Slovak article. It's not too good but hope it helps:

Mysterious glow over Slovakia

This morning people from many parts of Slovakia are asking the question: What caused the mysterious glow registered on Sunday night just before midnight?

Update expert opinion and information about crater in Bretka

”Just before midnight I noticed a loud noise which words cannot describe. I saw the glow in the window. The whole event lasted about 5-6 seconds, but it was something extraordinary” we were informed by a reader from Tornale. The so far unexplained event had been noticed in Rožňava near Košice and even in Hungary. Some thought it looked like fireworks, others were afraid that an explosion in some factory happened.

”I saw a bright light. I thought it was just lightning, but I didn’t hear the thunder. Even more so it was snowing at the time, that is why I thought it was odd,” was the reaction of a female student from Východna.

The possibility of supersonic aircraft in the sky has been ruled out by the Ministry of interior. “The events that you are referring to were registered by us at around 11.20pm, we looked into the matter and can confirm that it had nothing to do with the activities of the Ministry of defence,” said the spokesman for the Ministry of defence Vladimir Gamela. According to the Commander of the air force it was most likely a meteor above the northern and eastern part of the country. “It was no rocket nor an airplane or anything else. We examined the matter over our military line. Our radars, which are part of the NATO system, did not register anything. The media as well as the general public can obtain further details from astronomers, that is if they managed to record this event,” said Gemela.

Expert: it was an object from space that burned up

The secretary of the Astronomical institute of the Slovak academy of sciences in Tatranska Lomnica Drahomír Chochol confirmed for the News Agency of the Slovak Republic that this strange event was indeed a meteor, space object, that entered the atmosphere. “When it entered the atmosphere the object heated up and exploded,” he added that until now the Astronomical institute is sorting a mass of information provided by the general public. “We were not able to observe the phenomenon in the Tatras because of the overcast weather. But we have information from the Czech Republic according to which they registered a bolide, a light phenomenon associated with the explosion of a meteor, with a magnitude of minus nine,” added Chochol. According to this information it should have been green colored object. “The explosion probably occurred at an altitude of 30 kilometers near Košíce. We will be able to determine the exact trajectory after three scientific observations of the event are available,” clarified Chochol. The object could have been the size of a football and probably only small fragments fell to the ground.

Did the meteorite fall near Bretka?

A crater should be near the village of Bretka located in the eastern part of the country. It should have been caused by a meteorite that fell on a Sunday night. This was the first information from a reader on the website Aktuality.sk. The reader Zuzana hadn’t seen it herself but supposedly obtained the information from the local firefighters: “They are keeping watch on the city to prevent people getting irradiated,” she further writes.

The Bretka municipal office did not either confirm or refute this information. “We have heard about it but where this impact site is supposed to be we do not know,” said one employee of the office to Aktuality. sk

At the end of the article there are two CCTV videos which captured the flash.

If you have the time, it would be great to get something from the Czech press on it. Sott loves data! Especially for events like this where triangulation from other sources is valuable.

Hey dövan, if you find some time, would you like to translate this whole article, so that we can send it on to the Sott team? It doesn't have to be a perfect translation, just accurate enough that it's faithful to the original. And don't worry about any grammar or spelling mistakes; Sott can smooth them over.

Thanks!
