Fire in Santa Barbara County threatens Gaviota area homes (California)
Published on Jun 15, 2016
GOLETA (CBSLA.com) — A 200-acre brush fire is burning in Santa Barbara’s Refugio Canyon.

Some reports said the fire, which started at about 15 acres, grew to about 250 acres after nightfall.

The blaze has been dubbed the Sherpa Fire because it started near Sherpa Ranch.

The fire was first reported around 3:20 p.m. Wednesday.

KCAL9’s Tom Wait reported from the command center at Refugio State Beach in Goleta, about a mile from the Reagan Ranch.

According to the Santa Barbara County Fire Department no structures have been damaged but some homes are threatened as of 10 p.m. Wednesday.

Mandatory evacuations have been ordered for Refugio Canyon, Las Flores Canyon and Venadito Canyon.

About 250 residents have been displaced.

Authorities said the fire is growing and started at the top of the canyon and is working its way south towards the beach.

There are no reports of injuries.

At present, firefighters are battling the blaze from the ground and air — including a DC-10 and eight air tankers.

The fire is burning in steep and heavy terrain.

Wait said in some places there were 30-foot walls of fire.

The area is not densely populated, but some campers have also been replaced.

People have been steadily moving out.

Wait spoke to a camp manager who said her camp was filled with many people have family reunions.

“I’ve been the manager here for 10 years,” she said, “and we’ve never been evacuated before now. So it’s pretty scary.”

Fire raging in eastern Arizona south of Show Low
Published on Jun 15, 2016
SHOW LOW, Ariz. (KSAZ/AP) A wind-whipped brush fire has now charred nearly 4 square miles in eastern Arizona about 12 miles south of Show Low and Navajo County authorities have issued pre-evacuation notices for residents of five communities.

Bureau of Indian Affairs officials say the Cedar Creek Fire is moving in a northerly direction in rugged terrain, causing a huge plume of smoke.

They say the fire started around noon Wednesday and was at about 1,000 acres within three hours and then an estimated 2,500 acres by 5 p.m. MST.

That's when Navajo County officials told residents in Show Low, Pinetop-Lakeside, McNary, Fort Apache and Hon-Dah to prepare for possible evacuation.

The cause of the fire isn't immediately known.

It was also an idea that i entertained until very, very recently because of the increasing coverage that is made on several alternative medias. But are really fires globally increasing ?

I came accros this study while I was reading a french article about the recent results of the CLOUD experiment :

Global trends in wildfire and its impacts: perceptions versus realities in a changing world

Abstract

Wildfire has been an important process affecting the Earth's surface and atmosphere for over 350 million years and human societies have coexisted with fire since their emergence. Yet many consider wildfire as an accelerating problem, with widely held perceptions both in the media and scientific papers of increasing fire occurrence, severity and resulting losses. However, important exceptions aside, the quantitative evidence available does not support these perceived overall trends. Instead, global area burned appears to have overall declined over past decades, and there is increasing evidence that there is less fire in the global landscape today than centuries ago. Regarding fire severity, limited data are available. For the western USA, they indicate little change overall, and also that area burned at high severity has overall declined compared to pre-European settlement. Direct fatalities from fire and economic losses also show no clear trends over the past three decades. Trends in indirect impacts, such as health problems from smoke or disruption to social functioning, remain insufficiently quantified to be examined. Global predictions for increased fire under a warming climate highlight the already urgent need for a more sustainable coexistence with fire. The data evaluation presented here aims to contribute to this by reducing misconceptions and facilitating a more informed understanding of the realities of global fire.

I don't red the whole study and i don't pretend to bring a definitive answer to that question. It needs definitively more investigations. I just wanted to share this with people who are possibly interrested with the question of fire trends.

Two fast-moving brush fires burning in the Angeles National Forest Monday have forced evacuations for nearby homes and closed Highway 39, police and fire officials said. Other residents were told to prepare for possible evacuation. Health officials have deemed the air quality unhealthy in the area, advising those smelling smoke to remain indoors if possible.

There is a fire that has been burning for more than 24 hours in Hong Kong which originated from an Industrial storage facility. Sadly, 1 firefighter has passed away battling the blaze, and they are still struggling to get it under control. No known cause of the fire yet, but many speculative ideas.

Three more firefighters injured and buses on standby for evacuation at longest-running Hong Kong fire in 20 years

http://www.scmp.com/news/hong-kong/education-community/article/1980369/three-more-firefighters-injured-and-buses-standby

Three more firefighters battling the city’s longest running fire in two decades were taken to hospital on Thursday evening, while preparations have been put in place to evacuate hundreds of residents living nearby.
Several double-decker buses and two community centres in Kwun Tong and Lam Tin were on standby to provide transport and shelter for affected residents near the Ngau Tau Kok industrial building, where a fourth-alarm fire has been burning since 11am on Tuesday.

Senior station officer Thomas Cheung, 30, died while battling the fire on Tuesday, while nine others have been taken to hospital with injuries since the fire broke out.
On Thursday afternoon, Citybus confirmed the government had hired two of their buses, which were seen parked in Kowloon Bay – a short distance from the scene.
“Arrangements will be announced by the government,” a Citybus spokeswoman said.
The police force’s insiders told the Post police had also made preparations in case of evacuation.
“Officers from the Police Tactical Unit are ready to be deployed to evacuate affected residents and cordon off the area,” one source said.
He said some police vehicles would be available to transport affected residents if necessary.
The sources added the measures were part of their precautionary measures.
Various departments such as police and Home Affairs Department said on Thursday afternoon that there was no plan to evacuate yet.
It is understood cracks were found on an exterior wall of the burning industrial building, but as it was not the core wall, there was no danger to the structure.
The blaze broke out at about 11am on Tuesday and was upgraded to a fourth-alarm fire later that night. Fires are rated on a scale of one to five, based on severity.
The blaze, which broke out at SC Storage – a mini-storage facility – has raised doubts about the fire safety standards of old industrial buildings in Hong Kong and whether there is a need for more stringent regulations at such facilities.
Firefighters said earlier that putting out the fire was a challenge because there were about 200 cubicles inside, all separated by metal sheets.

Fire is still burning, and sadly a second firefighter has passed away - HK government now considering evacuating the nearby residential buildings.

http://www.scmp.com/news/hong-kong/law-crime/article/1979855/deadly-industrial-building-blaze-claims-life-second-hong

The inferno that engulfed an industrial building in a densely packed Hong Kong neighbourhood on Tuesday claimed a second firefighter’s life on Thursday evening as it continued to burn out of control for a third straight day.

The city was stunned by images of more firemen being carried out of the burning Amoycan Industrial Centre in Ngau Tau Kok on stretchers while their colleagues battled the smoke and flames with little progress.

Three firemen were rushed to hospital, where one of them succumbed to his injuries. Senior fireman Samuel Hui Chi-kit, 37, was found unconscious by his teammates on the third floor of the building as they were changing shifts to leave the site at about 7pm. He died at United Christian Hospital in Kwun Tong at 9.10pm.

Director of Fire Services David Lai Man-hin said Hui was one of the four members of a breathing apparatus team sent to the third floor.

Meeting the press with Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying, Lai broke down as he expressed his grief at the loss of his colleagues on Thursday night.

Repeatedly asked by the media whether better commanding and strategies could have avoided the two deaths, a tearful Lai said: “I have been the director for more than two years, and I spent 37 years in the fire services. The most difficult thing for me is to tell their relatives [about the deaths]… No member of the senior management could hope to sacrifice a colleague’s life.”

Hui is survived by his wife and a seven-year-old son.

The two other casualties were also in serious condition when they were rescued from the same floor at around the same time.

Industrial building fire in Hong Kong finally brought under control:

http://www.scmp.com/news/hong-kong/law-crime/article/1980863/killer-fire-tamed-after-80-hours

The killer blaze that burned out of control for four days at an industrial building in a densely packed Hong Kong neighbourhood was finally tamed on Friday night, as the city’s security minister rejected concerns that the entire block could collapse.
The inferno at the Amoycan Industrial Centre in Ngau Tau Kok was brought under control at 7.38pm, more than 80 hours after it broke out on Tuesday, killing two firefighters over two days.
