For new SOTT look, on Side panels and the Donation link

Hi there,

I was searching today the donation link because I need to renew my year donation subscription.
It was weird because I had to search for it!
Just scrolling down eventually you can see it on the right side panel.

I have two comments:
1.- I believe it would be much better to find a donation link on the top header, near the menu, in a place visible always (support us, donate).

2.- I've detected even on full screen mode that I have to scroll down a lot.
Eventually is great, because some articles are long and nice to read.
Nonetheless a lot of articles are smaller in size, nonetheless you to need to scroll down to see the footer.
This is due to the size of side panels.
This issue, by the way I've also detected on cassiopaea.org/
A huge scroll appears and the document do not extend to use the whole screen.

On this I believe can be improved. A good idea is to offer a printable version without side panels and banners. This would be perfect and also is great for handling on an e-book reader with HTML support. (I can test!)

Just my opinion.

Thanks for reading.

I would second that
the Donation link on SOTT and cassiopaea.org is not easy to find !

On SOTT it's the reddish button next to the flags at the top right of the page. The SOTT logo with a "$" instead of on "S".

On Cassiopaea.org... I don't even know if there IS a donate button! :-[

Probably should have one on this forum, too.

Thanks Scott for the intel.
With so much information displayed, I did not notice the "$" button.

For websites I prefer the minimalistic approach with clear clean crystal buttons.
Nonetheless thanks!

I think that'll do it for this forum!

That page is accessible from the "Donate" button in the top menu bar. I'll think I'll add a little graphic in the site header, as well.

:D

Okeydokey, now there is a big fat gold donation button on the Cassiopaea.org web site and on this forum.

For the new SOTT, there will be a "box" at the top of the right sidebar used for advertising stuff. The default content for that spot on the page will be a donation request - probably in the form of an image. Then, when a new issue of DCM or something else is released, it will be temporarily replaced with another image, or some flash, or whatever.

Laura asked me ages ago to add a Donation link to the forum, and I couldn't figure it out back then. I'm not sure why not, because it was SUPER easy to do.

Then I totally forgot about it!

I can't believe that all this time, there was no easy way for anyone to donate. :O

So, thanks for the idea!

Well, that's one reason that SOTT is currently undergoing another redesign. It was generally agreed that while the current style looks "cool", it is just way too busy.

There is also the fact that with all the overlapping transparent graphics, it was really painful to do the CSS. Worse yet, developing other themes was just darn near impossible - especially with SOTT in 4 languages now.

So, the new SOTT style will be sort of "back to basics". The new style is a modernized version of the old SOTT style.

This new style is SO easy to work with that I'm already planning the first theme: Peacock!

First things first, though: gotta get the default new theme done!

Hi Mr. Scott - in firefox 3.6 the date now partially obscures the search button - any way to adjust that? It seems to be due to the very groovy donate button.

Lol. I was really surprised as I saw it today for the first time, it sticks out and carries its message. Hopefully it is supporting you guys more! :)

Do a Shift-Refresh and see if that fixes it. It WAS over the date, but then I tweaked stuff some more. Maybe you just have an older version of the stylesheet cached in your browser.

Hopefully that'll do it.
