I've been hearing/reading this a lot lately: "for the foreseeable future." What does that really mean?

you may want to give some context in the sense, where are you hearing/reading? - In the forum or new items or radio or tv etc?. General meaning you can get it from the internet. here is one.

you think that it will continue to happen for a long time.

In the post-covid context, there is LOT of uncertainty going on at all levels. LOT of decisions are put aside without much planning at the Govt./Corporation/personal levels which is strange and I never heard of this happened before. Even during the wars, people planned for post-war scenario's. But for Covid, It looked No body is certain of any thing any more. No amount of proof seems to be convincing most of the populace.

"For the foreseeable future " sounds like a spell of words to excuse the authorization of more lockdown measures on the way. It just shows that when hearing this from our fearful leaders that we just have to accept it as a given without any critical or logical thinking involved. Just to accept what they say as they must have our best interests at heart....
It sounds like the future is set and you don't have any choice.... Almost psychotic.....

Yes, Arwenn and Hally. Sorry, Seek10, that I wasn't more clear. For me it just means nothing. Too vague. But it's being tossed around all over the place, AZ Gov Doug Ducey's speech last night for example. I just seem to be hearing this everywhere now, mostly in regards to masks, etc., the "new normal." (Also ridiculous). For the foreseeable future. I just felt like getting it off of me and saying something. I feel like I'm going mad. Shoot. I miss normal society and I don't want to be stuck at home for the "foreseeable future." Yeesh. Might as well just say indefinitely. Is there actually such a thing as the foreseeable future? Who came up with this term? They can see the future? How far out? Good grief. Sorry. The world has gone weird. That's the new normal. Maybe I'll crack Carroll's Alice In Wonderland 🙃

From vocabulary . com

foreseeable

If you know something’s coming, it’s foreseeable. Foreseeable things can be predicted or guessed ahead of time. If there’s no money for you in the foreseeable future, you better get a job.

The adjective foreseeable most often turns up in the phrase "the foreseeable future," which basically means "as far in the future as I can predict." The meaning is in the word – it’s the “before” you’re “able” to “see.” You might be so mad at your sister that you tell her you won't drive her to school for the foreseeable future — in other words, you can't, at this point, imagine a time when you'll be willing to give her a ride.

So they can see no where in the future that things will change from what they are like now.
