Fractured Calcaneous (heel)

I jumped from a height onto concrete (duh) and have fractured my calcaneous. On top of having it plaster casted I am looking for ways to a speedy recovery.
I am committed to my EE CD once a day and am pretty good with my diet. Surely this will help to some extent, even if its just for the inflammation.
Does anyone have any other sound advice to recover fractures quickly?
I am a strong, fit person and I exercise regularly. Now I'm off my feet and on crutches I am a bit limited but will keep working upper body and once I see the specialist next week will find out if there is such a thing as a water proof cast so I can get in the pool and swim laps with my arms only.
The thing with this type of fracture is that it can take a few months to heal because of the force exerted during our gait (walking) cycle and the way the foot is required to strike through the heel. Obviously I need to stabilise the area for that to happen but surely theres more than just sitting around waiting for the process that can be done.
Anyways, if there is anyone in the know about bone healing please give me a hoy!
I'm trying not to think of this as wasted time and want to be as productive as possible.
Thanks in advance!

Sorry to hear about this fisheye. Calcaneous fracture is one of the nasty fractures to have.

I had used a homeoptahic preparation of symphytum (comfrey)(6C) to help heal a fracture. Comfrey has a long reputation in healing fractures. There is a forum thread about it here .

Are you up to speed with the ketogenic diet thread? Bone broth may provide you with nutrients for speedy recovery.

All the best and take care.

Perceval did the same thing a couple years ago. The orthopedic doctor ordered a special shoe for him and took off the cast the ER doc had put on. It took a couple months. Like obyvatel, mentioned, I would use comfrey and DMSO.

Thanks guys.
I had read up about DMSO and have a bottle in the cupboard.
I will need to wait to get back to see the specialist next week.
The ER doctor has also put a half leg cast on but I am hoping this wont stay on once I get in to see the orthopedic next week.
I have only recently started reading up on the Ketogenic Diet. Maybe this is a sign I need to get serious ;)
Onto it.

Do press the orthopedic guy to remove the cast and give you the half shoe. It's a shoe that is elevated without a heel so that the heel gets no contact/pressure from walking. Having it open this way allows you to apply DMSO cream/solution and comfrey which can cut the bone healing time in half. Do some googling on comfrey, though I think there is a thread about it here on the forum.

Have done, thanks Laura.
Apparently Comfrey used to be standard issue in the army medical kits to help with bone healing, ligament and joint strain as well as inflammation.
I read that I can make a pulstice with a mix of DMSO and comfrey. Will go in search of the comfrey tomorrow so I have everything ready.
I will def push to get this cast off. I live in the tropics and already feel the moisture building underneath (yuk). As well as the application of DMSO and comfrey I desperately want to get in the pool and keep the rest of my body moving.
Thank goodness for this forum. Its always such a helpful community.

here is the thread

you can also take Comfrey internally as homeopathic remedy ( Symphytum 30c) daily until your heel is healed. It works wonders for bone synthesis.

Speedy recovery!

Sorry to hear this fisheye, it's not the worst fracture (I presume) but painful none the less, and annoying to have to hobble around on crutches. Not having the cast will help a lot I think. I was really not looking forward to 8 weeks with it all the way up to my knee. I was really surprised when the doc. did that, I was expecting ankle-height. So I went to a specialist the next day and he looked at the x-ray, pointed to the cast and said "you don't need that!". So he cut it off and off I went with a little shoe instead, which worked ok, but the crutches were still pretty much essential for about 4-5 weeks.

Sorry to hear about your broken heel. It is a nasty fracture, but not to be feared. As you said yourself, keep moving, upper arm, legs, swimming, etc. there are plenty of exercises you can do that doesn't involve your heel. Get that "shoe cast" and some DMSO and comfrey and in no time, you'll see your upper body strengthened and also your legs AND your heel healed :)

Hi Fisheye,

Sorry to hear about your heel, I am currently nursing a right ankle bone with two small fractures, I had been treating it as a severe sprain until I went to the doctor. I searched for comfrey tea and cream on the net for local suppliers (didn't have time to wait for delivery of DMSO), found some comfrey cream in a botanical shop in Newtown, Sydney - Hilde Hemmes Herbals is the brand name, I've been using it for 2 days, I call it magic cream as already a lot of inflamation is gone and the bruising is in the yellow stage.

By the way when I went to the hospital for a cast the doctor decided I should have a 'Moon Boot' instead - like a really soft but straight ski boot, he reckoned it would heal quicker (as I'm travelling to Europe in 2 weeks), and I'd be more mobile, plus it comes on and off for shower etc. This boot was free with the emergency treatment, maybe they also carry the type of shoe Percival had.

Just a tip to get around the house (non carpet areas), I use an old basic computer chair without arms and back, real easy, and also a plastic shower stool - perfect.

Hope you heal soon.

Thanks everyone,
Lindenlea, thats exactly what I'm doing to get around the house. Its kinda fun. And at work I have a wheelchair.
H.E., my local health food store advised me that Comfrey wasn't available for internal use in Australia. I will however go tomorrow to find the homeopathic remedy you suggested, thank you.
I've been going into the deepest trance during meditation that I struggle to pull myself out. Its quite bizarre but I guess my body wants to stay there while its healing. Usually I slip right out as soon as Lauras CD finishes but I have been staying in that state for a good 15-20 minutes more these last 2 days.
As a Pilates practitioner, this experience is teaching me a whole lot about foot mechanics.. and seated options for exercises, so all is not lost.
I see the specialist on Monday but have started slipping the cast off twice a day to really salve it up with the Comfrey/DMSO mix. I still sleep and work with the cast on just to keep everything stable until I get a definite diagnosis.

You could try to use the repeat function on the CD player if you want to prolong your 'stay' in trance mode for healing purposes.

Just a thought. fwiw

I am sure you should be able find the homeopathic preparation of Comfrey or Symphytum, its not exactly Comfrey for internal use it is more like "energetic imprint " of Comfrey.
If not you can order online from Helios pharmacy in the UK , delivery is pretty fast and the price for the single remedy is low.

Found Symphytum, thanks H.E. I think I'm doing all I can to speed up this process.
EE
DMSO
Arnica
Symphytum
Magnesium
Silica
Comfrey ointment

Oh no! Now I'm in a bugger of a situation. Went to see the ortho guy today and he said I needed a half leg cast for 6 weeks before I can get the cam boot. I argued my point to him and the caster and they both agreed I must wear it.
Now I can't put a comfrey poultice on which I've been doing every day Plus DMSO.
I feel like I am going to be well behind the 8 ball I I can't continue my own process of healing.
Any suggestions????
Please help!
