Google Maps says its 29h without running into a toll station, it says 20h otherwise. If he indeed drove 20h as the report says he must've paid somehow.

It’s true. At 3.1 l/100km, a 1500km trip would use 46.5 litres. A full tank of fuel for a Citroen C3 (45-50ltr).

He'd have to be doing an ideal speed (like a constant 80-90kmph) on the highways to achieve that fuel consumption.

I don't think so. Looks to me like Citroen C5 II Break (Tourer).

Yeah, it's a 2008 C5 diesel.

There could still be the possibility that the elderly man has dementia and the original report is incorrect about his cognitive function. My grandmother had dementia and would get lost 10 minutes away from her house and drive for hours and hours not knowing where she was. There are many similar reports like this with dementia cases, but this would still seem to be a pretty extreme instance. Hopefully there are some follow up reports.

Yeah, I think this has to be considered as the likely explanation unless other evidence appears.

I admit that my first idea was that of a local 4D bleed through transmitting the guy to Croatia.

In that case we wouldn't have to worry about how an 85year old could be able to do a 20 hour ride and not become conspicuous along the way.
