"From Christian faith to nihilistic void"

I'm currently reading this article and I came to the part that talks about literacy rates.

I quote: "Did you know that according to a 2011 National Institute for Literacy report, a whopping 47% of adults in Detroit, Michigan are "functionally illiterate" ?
Unfortunately this trend is not limited to Detroit or the USA. Since 1970 world literacy rates show alarming declines (see chart above). "

Next to that is a picture titled "World literacy rate (1970-2015)". The picture is very pixelated.

Now, I was courious about this, because it didn't make much sense to me that global literacy rates were declining from 1970 to 2015 so I clicked on the picture and the title on the actual graph seemed to say "Illiteracy" rather than literacy. Now obviously, it was pixelated so I wasn't sure. So I right clicked on the picture in Chrome and pressed "search this image in google".

I just randomly bumped into a couple of links on it several of them being of a higher resolution quality saying "Illiteracy".

There is a general "Literacy" article on wikipedia too however that has a different graph but one that also shows illiteracy to be in decline, that it has "halved" from 1970 to 2015.

Now, I haven't researched the topic deeply enough to say anything with confidence but it looks like a genuine mistake and should be corrected.

A question to Pierre would be where he found the picture he is using on the actual sott article e.g. the original source just for clarification.

In any event, I didn't want to post this on the sott article so I don't spread paranoia unecceseraily on an otherwise informative article.

Mod's note: The SOTT link has been activated.

Re: A mistake in the new "From Christian faith to nihilistic void" article?

Thanks for the heads up. It was a genuine mistake. Has been corrected now.

Hi Domagoj,

Well spotted and elegantly solved as well. :cool2:

Found out that someone else immediately questioned those figures of Detroit long ago as well:

Re: A mistake in the new "From Christian faith to nihilistic void" article?

Thanks for pointing out this mistake. I mixed up two studies. Joe removed the phrase that was wrong and I added this one:
Over a period of eleven years [1992-2003] the proficiency of all approximately 37 million college graduates [in the US] has declined sharply.

Re: A mistake in the new "From Christian faith to nihilistic void" article?

thank you for fixing it ... I also wanted to make a thread for the ones who came across this article for the first time recently, as I did, it is highly recommend to read the other two articles that are underline at the top of the article. SO I am using this opportunity for that.

Eradicating beauty: The destruction of art

It is excellent insight at erosion in contemporary art too ... some how it happend that last week I was reading some art theory and stuff from art history about queer and feminist art, in order to prepare exam for the university, and it was so difficult to go through all that nonsense for me, I thought about to give up or just skip that part, and when I spotted also in the other article about gender theory, what is written on Judith Butler, I was so happy to read so well written a real and consistent point about it.

Yeah, I read about half of it this morning, and had to get off the net, so finished reading it offline later. I agree, it's a great article. The last couple centuries really sped up the decline of society for sure.
